Increase in latency each evening
« on: January 06, 2019, 09:13:36 AM »

Having moved house a couple of months ago, we no longer get my FTTC from a BDUK cabinet at the end of the drive. Instead, we and six other properties each get an overhead line from a pole supplied from a Huawei cabinet a few hundred yards away. We still sync at the contracted rate of 40/10.

On the TBB BQM I see a consistent increase in latency each evening, although not necessarily at the same times. It doesn't create a problemfor us, but the detective in me would like to understand what causes it.

Any thoughts?

Is it just latency or is speed also affected?

If just latency, then I'd be tempted to do some outbound tracerts to check the end to end time with somewhere like the BBC.

I wouldn't like to comment without seeing the BQM, which are designed for sharing  :P

As well as seeing the BQM I'd like to see TBB speedtests one normal and one when the latency is increased. I'm half expecting we'll see a slowdown in the x1 while the x6 holds up pretty well.

Sorry not to have shown this before. I thought I had, but it obviously didn't work  :-[

Not what I was expecting the BQM to look like.

Do you run any automated of frequent speed tests to see if throughput is affected.

Looks like some congestion but it's not the typical BQM for this.

Run a tracert to a few websites before and during and see if anything changes.
I've read a few retorts about Vodafone doing some crazy routing during peak times.

I am aware that the speed we are getting is waaay below the sync speed, but there are some issues with internal house cabling that need to be addressed, and I can't properly get to that for a little while yet. However, as requested, here's the speed test from this afternoon:

Two things stand out from the speed test:
  • Single threaded much worse than multi threaded.
  • Vodafone!
That's classic congestion - you need to complain to the ISP.

Edit: have a read of posts on the thinkbroadband forums - e.g. http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/vodafone/f/4610425-slow-single-thread-speeds.html?vc=1

Edit 2: Was that speed test using a wired or wireless connection to the router? If it was wireless could we see a wired test please.

Edit 3: Are still on the same exchange you were on before you moved?

Thanks @jelv for the link: I'll look it up.

It's a powerline connection to the router. I know it's not ideal, but until I can get some additional cabling in it's the best I can do. We generally use wireless anyway.

No, we have moved from West Wales to Southern England, so only the ISP is the same.

I had wondered about the phenomenon being due to congestion: would someone nearby watching IPTV be likely to have this effect?

Edit: Here's this evening's Speed Test result:

And here's the current BQM:

Go Vodafone  :wall:

It is congestion on the Vodafone backhaul, clear as day. Nothing to do with other customers really, everything to do with Vodafone not upgrading the network they bought from Cable and Wireless in a timely fashion.

Sorry, mate.

Ironic, isn't it? Now I'm only 25 miles from Newbury I get far worse results than when I was in West Wales!

Ah well, that's life! Only 15 months to go....

sadly vodafone seem to have backhaul issues right now, its the first time I have seen it on a bmq so thanks for posting.

Has me concerned myself because if I go full FTTP it will be vodafone.
