Anyone Replace A iphone Screen ?.
« on: December 27, 2018, 02:56:34 PM »

Had an unusual Xmas gift from my Daughter, one of her presents to me was her 'Broken Screen' iphone 6  :-\
Has anyone had the patience to change one themselves ? if so how was it.
I see there are YouTube video's about it.

Most towns have specialist shops that will do it for you, for around £80 - 100 or so.

It is very easy to mess it up if you don't know what you are doing!

if you are good at following step by step instructions to the letter and have the correct tools then it's not particularly tricky.
just make sure you source a real iphone screen and not one of the cheaper poorer quality third party screens.

Never touched an iPhone.

Change the screen on my Samsung S3, my partners S5, and recently did my Huawei Mate 9 Pro.

The S3 had a tiny crack on the outer glass.
The Huawei Mate 9 Pro had a long crack from top to bottom.
Both were extremely easy to fix.

The S5 had a "shattered" glass screen and was considerably more difficult because of this. Every individual piece of broken glass needs VERY carefully cleaned off the AMOLED screen without scratching it.

It depends if the outer glass is broken or the screen underneath, or both.

My 3 repairs are all the outer glass which cost about £5-£10 each.
I bought my Huawei Mate 9 Pro replacement screen for £8.99 and it came with the LOCA glue, tools, wipes, etc, even a UV torch to cure the glue.
I wouldn't use such a UV light for this job though.

If the screen underneath is broke it can be much more expensive.

This one looks well "shattered"   :'(
re 'It depends if the outer glass is broken or the screen underneath, or both.' Can you only tell by taking it apart. ?
Edit , Just turned it on and the back screen seems ok.
She said she dropped it twice on to hard surface and had been using for few weeks after, so much for 'Glass' screen saver she had on it.  >:(

Second this.   Long time ago I tried to replace a screen digitizer on an early iPod touch.  It ended badly.   Don’t remember exact details, but istr I terminally knackered the headphone socket.   Wasn’t too worried as it was old and the repair really just an experiment, but it taught me to be wary.

It may be easy after a little practice.  But getting the practice is the tricky bit, without a few devices to practice on.

I replaced the screen on my daughters cheap Android phone, first time I used double sided sticky tape, you can buy it specifically for the job in sizes down to 1mm wide, but this was useless and come unstuck, although it did come in useful for other repairs.

Second time I used B-7000 glue which has lots of recommendations, it is recommended to leave it to cure for 48 hours though. This stuck the screen well, until she broke it again, although it was still usable.

I've also replaced the battery in my Elephone P9000 which was pretty straight forward.

I've no idea how easy it is to change an iphone screen/glass, with my daughters it involved warming the screen with a hair dryer to soften the glue and then some delicate removal of leads. I did try replacing the glass on a Samsung tablet that was broken, but that ended badly.

One thing I have learned is they are very fiddly to repair, you need a good steady hand and plenty of light/good eyesight.

PS. Just about to pull my phone apart as the loudspeaker has stopped working - have ordered a replacement from China for £3.71, but just want to check a wire hasn't come off. This will really test me as the speaker wires are soldered on  :(

I've replaced loads.
Can do a genuine screen for about £60 (maybe more) or you can get cheaper screens for about £25-£30.
A six is easy enough to do and will take maybe 30 mins. You just have to be careful when removing the finger scan button. If they get damaged then you lose the functionality of a good portion of the phone (unlocking, Apple pay etc).

If you want it changed, you can ship it to me and I'll change it and just charge what I can get a screen for? No cost for fitting  :)

£60?!?
The screen works, it's just broken glass.

That's a £5-10 part on any Android phone.

Surely with an iPhone you don't have to replace the whole digitizer if it's just the outer glass broken?

It probably will, but if you read the description you have to remove the display and glass, then remove the glass from the display which is glued in place (as is the display assembly). I suppose if you destroy the display in the process then you've only lost a tenner on the glass, so if you have nerves of steel probably worth a go.

I've just had a look at prices again and they seem to have come down a fair bit actually from the last time I bought some.
You can get OEM screen assemblies for £35 or copies for about £15-£18.

I seem to recall a few posters on another forum stating that the OEM panels being sold use the same digitiser as the cheap ones but with a different glass. I'm not too sure if that is true though!!

As jOhn states, You can buy a glass on its own for £5 roughly. If it isn't done right, You end up losing sensitivity on the screen though.
Edit: Hopefully no screen sensitivity lost with that kit John posted as it contains the glue too.

Reading the reports on that link that j0hn sent I think I will opt out and buy the glass and LCD panel.
