Interested in a ZyXEL VMG3925-B10B (or similar)
« on: December 19, 2018, 04:11:26 PM »

[Moderator note: This thread has been created by splitting off from dee.jay's advertisement.]

Hi

which chipset does this have? is it Broadcom? can i use router monitoring software on it and tweak SNRM..?  I have an 80MB Plusnet connection and looking for a new Broadcom router that lets me tweak SNRM and allows monitoring software to record all data such as QLN, HLOG, SNR etc etc

thanks

You can't tweak SNR on FTTC with Broadcom chipsets.
This can only be done with Lantiq chipsets, or the hideous Mediatek chipsets.

The device above has the excellent BCM68168.

really? i have been out of the picture for a few years but it used to be that BROADCOM chips were the chips that you could tweak SNRM on and were brilliant performing chips?  the 6348, 6358, 6362 and 6368 you could tweak the SNRM on those (or some of them)?

I was under the impression that Lantiq chips were not very good, even my plusnet hub (BT HH5A) Lantiq chipset was very poor, it would drop bandwidth by half every few days and stay that way until it was rebooted, a replacement from Plusnet done the same, I swapped it for a Home-Hub 5B (BCM 63168) and the problem went away (and my speeds increased), I have since moved into a different location and unsure if my Cabinet is Huawei (Broadcom) or ECI (Lantiq)

I would like the next router I buy to have the following:

1. Tweakable SNRM
2. Be able to access SNR/Bit-Loading etc via RouterStats or other monitoring software
3. Dual or Tri-band Wi-Fi
4. At least 1 G-BIT LAN port
5. G.INP
6. Vectoring
7. Be wall mountable

this is to work on a 80Mbit/21ms plusnet connection

thanks

Only on ADSL, not VDSL2.

I don't know any modems that meet ALL those requirements.

Take out option 1 and I could name you a few.

As for option 7, if your cabinet isn't a BDUK funded cabinet that already has Vectoring then you don't need to worry about it.
OpenReach won't roll out Vectoring.

The ECI cabinets don't support it.
The Huawei cabinets need a number of additional components added and others swapped, at considerable expense.
The only Vectoring in the UK is on BDUK (state funded) Huawei cabinets, and only to help meet 24Mb+ properties passed targets.

We've hijacked dee.jay's thread, perhaps a mod could split the relevant posts and move this to a new thread?

thank you BK  :)

@ j0hn - I might throw the Plusnet Hub (BT HH5A - Lantiq) back on the connection once the 10-day DLM Line Training is complete as the 80MB upgrade only went live yesterday morning.

so which routers (preferably broadcom) can do the following?:

1. Be able to access SNR/Bit-Loading etc via DSLstats  or other monitoring software
2. Dual or Tri-band Wi-Fi
3. At least 1 x 1 G-BIT LAN port
4. G.INP
5. Be wall mountable

my current is BCM63168 BTHH5B which has 128MB RAM and 400Mhz x 2, I would like to upgrade to faster CPU

@snadge - a Zyxel VMG8924-B10A or VMG3925-B10B will do everything in that list.
Just make sure the one you buy comes with the wall mount as it often seems to go missing (less of an issue with the 3925 as it doubles as the desk stand).

The VMG-3925-B10B has wifi 5ghz as well at 1600mhz speeds (AC). I found it not as fast for sync speeds on my line so have kept it as a spare router to replace an Asus DSL-N55U router.
