Should i 'downgrade' to BT Fibre Essentials?
« on: December 04, 2018, 06:57:15 PM »

Hi. Looking for some expert advice / opinion from you all  ;D I'm wondering whether I am on the wrong tariff and overpaying as a result.

I'm currently on FTTC BT Superfast Fibre 1 Unlimited (what used to be BT Infinity 1 Unlimited). I'm some way from the cabinet (circa 1km) so speed is around 30mbps - ive posted my HG612 stats below. The HG612 is a new addition -  after the wifi on my BT smarthub (HH6) started playing up, I swapped to an unlocked HG612 and an Asus router. The change actually increased the connection speed by about 10% but unless I'm mistaken I reckon I'm about as fast as the line will provide now. The HG612 has been up for about 8 days now.

So the question is, can I safely move to a cheaper (BT) broadband tariff without losing whatever speed I now have? BT now do an Unlimited version of their "Fibre Essentials" package which I think is a 36Mbps maximum speed. As I'm getting less than that, it seems that I'm wasting money being on the higher 50/10 package. Of course, when I speak with BT they just try to get me to "upgrade" to their 66Mbps 'Plus' deal, which will I guess be even more of a waste of money for me! No mention of the Essentials package at all.

One other question - Do these stats show that I have Interleaving on the line now? I'm pretty sure that the HH6 was "Fastpath" (altho at a lower 28Mbps speed). Will this interleaving ever change to Fastpath, or does the higher connection speed I now get also mean that Interleaving is here to stay?

EDIT: Forgot to explain - if you reckon the speed might increase beyond the 36Mbps maximum that that Essentials package provides, that'd obviously be a reason to stay on the package I have currently. But that's another 20% faster than what I have today. So probably unlikely I imagine.

Many thanks for any help you can post.

BT's 55/10 FTTC offering is now advertised as average 36Mb.

Ofcom imposed changes that means they no longer advertise  "upto" but averages instead.

I fear it's the same package you are on.
That's BT's slowest FTTC offering.
Anything slower is ADSL based from the exchange, unless you live in the Chelsea? exchange area, which I think can still order 18/2.
Might be wrong on the last point.

Cheers. There definitely seems to be some cheaper package called "Essential" in their price list, but it is totally not advertised on their website or mentioned by their sales agents.

e.g. on page 160 of this https://www.productsandservices.bt.com/assets/pdf/BT_PhoneTariff_Residential.pdf

ill have to try harder with the sales agents!

I believe BT have restarted selling the 40MB tier, hence the advertised speed of 36.

The 55MB tier has an advertised speed of 50MB.

The stats seem to show rjpreston has g.inp on the downstream so a speed boost isn't likely unless a) there is a wiring issue or b) their target SNR falls.

I could see it on the BT website. The offerings were:

Superfast Fibre Essential - Average speed 36Mb
Superfast Fibre - Average speed 50Mb
Superfast Fibre 2 - Average speed 67Mb
Superfast Fibre Plus - Average speed 67Mb
Superfast Fibre Plus + Complete Wi-Fi - Average speed 67Mb
