DSLstats 6.5 on Windows - not saving last snapshot of day
« on: October 29, 2018, 03:12:13 PM »

Hi,

My install is set to a 4 hour graph, snapshots every 4 hours starting from 04:00 each day (I'm aware of a bug if starting from 00:00, not sure if that is now fixed).   What I find is that it doesn't save the last snapshot each day - it saves on 00:00-04:00, 04:00-08:00, 08:00-12:00, 12:00-16:00 and 16:00-20:00.   It doesn't save the last one 20:00-00:00.   Is this a problem with how to represent midnight?   Is there some other way it can be configured to save snapshots on whole hour boundaries that would work better?

Thanks,   Tony S

The explanation of course is that 00:00 is the start of a new day, and the first snapshot of the day is taken at 04:00. I thought that I had fixed the bug when the first snapshot is set to 00:00, but it doesn't seem to be noted in the changelog, so I'm not sure. I'll set mine to start at 00:00 and see what happens tomorrow.

You could set the first snapshot to be at 03:59, but if you really want whole hours, then have the first snapshot at 01:00 (or 02:00 or 03:00) which would ensure that nothing is missed.

I'll try setting it to start at 00:01 just now, see how it does tonight.

I set mine to take snapshots every 4 hours starting at 00:00, and it worked as intended, the first snapshot being taken a few seconds after 00:00. (Snapshots are taken immediately after sampling, so the exact time depends on when you started recording).

Thanks, I'll give that a try.   Starting 00:01 works but apart from not being exact whole hour, it's counter intuitive because the last four hours of each day is actually saved in the next day's log directory.  Maybe I need to start at 03:59 instead, then all but one minute is in the expected day's folder (how I expected it to work starting 04:00).

Dare I butt in!:-\  ISTM that for the graphs there is no problem with 00:01 being effectively the last one of the previous day. However, assuming Error Averages are wanted, won't the last be taken at 20:01,as at 00:01 next day will contain ~ 1 minute of stats.

Could an addition to the program to record at 23:59 be worth consideration sometime?

What is the problem with using 23:59? When it saves it does it put the correct date against the file. It shouldn't take more than a minute to process but does it save the date/time when the process starts to record against all files?

If I understand correctly, the configured "Take first snapshot of the day" setting means literally it won't take any snapshot before that time.  So setting this to 23:59 with my 4 hour window would mean only one snapshot taken each day, taken at 23:59 and recording the time from 19:59 to 23:59.

With start set at 00:01 the first snapshot in todays directory 2018-10-30 contains date from 20:01 yesterday to 00:01 today.

This all comes down to the ambiguity about midnight - is it the end of the day at 24:00 or is it the start of the next day at 00:00?  Logically (to me) as the snapshot time marks the end of the segment saved, not the beginning, it would make more sense for midnight to be considered part of the previous day.

The time 24:00 doesn't exist. 00:00 is always the start of the day. Look at any 24-hour clock.

You're right of course regarding the number used.  But the exact time of 00:00 is also the end of the previous day.  Taking midnight out of the discussion for the moment I suppose another way of looking at it would be a four hour graph starting at say 04:00 should show all the readings for the four hours starting at that time, so 04:00 to 07:59, then the next snapshot would show 08:00 to 11:59.  240 readings in each.   Or 04:01 to 08:00.  I remember doing my head in when I was writing monitoring and logging software - the user interface for graphs was full of these issue.

00:00 is always confusing, but according to Greenwich Mean Time

Quote
00:00:00 is neither AM or PM and 00:00 AM or 00:00PM has no meaning.

00:00:00 is Midnight.
Every day starts precisely at midnight and AM starts immediately after that point in time e.g. 00:00:01.

12:00:00 is Noon.
It is after Noon that PM starts eg 12:00:01

Therefore:
5th Nov 2018 00:00:00 =  Midnight 5th Nov = start of Monday 5th Nov.

I'm confused.   If you took the first snapshot of the day at 04:00 (or even 03:59), would that not cover the preceding (first) 4 hours of the day.  ie the recording between midnight and 4am?

Yes, the first snapshot was taken correctly covering 00:00 to 04:00.  The problem was that the last snapshot 20:00 to 00:00 wasn't being taken.  Reading between the line it seems the code sees 00:00 as part of the following day, and on the following day it's been configured not to take a snapshot until 04:00.

A few PC and other problems means I've only just been able to run DSL Stats continuously, but I can confirm that setting first snapshot to 03:59 now works and all snapshots are in the expected day folder.
