Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has appointed Elaine Doherty to be the City Development Manager for Edinburgh and Stirling in Scotland, which is due to benefit from a joint £110m project with UK ISP Vodafone to deploy a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network.

At present Cityfibre already has a 150km long Dark Fibre network in Edinburgh and a smaller 24km one in Stirling, which are used to serve local public sector sites and businesses. But in April 2018 both Cityfibre and Vodafone jointly announced that they’d be using this as a stepping stone to build a much wider residential focused Gigabit broadband network in both cities.

All of this forms part of last year’s £500m commitment by the two companies to rollout FTTH ultrafast broadband. Phase One of this scheme is already underway and will seek to cover a “minimum” of 1 million homes in up to 12 of Cityfibre’s existing cities and towns, which aims to be “largely complete” by 2021. The Edinburgh and Stirling deployment alone will consume a hefty £110 million of that budget.

In order to oversee that work, Cityfibre has appointed a local City Development Manager to the project, Elaine Doherty, who is said to have more than 25 years’ experience in the telecoms industry. Elaine has held senior leadership roles at Motorola Global Handsets, Logica and most recently served as director of marketing, sales and IT for Rabbie’s Trail Burners, a Scottish travel operator.

    Elaine Doherty said:

“Digital infrastructure is going to play a crucial role in growing Scotland’s economy so I am delighted to be joining an organisation that is doing everything it can to transform cities up and down the country.

The benefits of full fibre connectivity are massive, not only to businesses but also residents. I look forward to working closely with the key stakeholders in Edinburgh and Stirling to ensure these cities can really maximise the opportunities offered by full fibre. At the same time, I’m determined to ensure that the local communities are with us every step of the way and understand the difference ultrafast broadband can have – now, and in the future.”

Rob Hamlin, Commercial Director of CityFibre, said:

“Elaine ticked all the boxes of what we were looking for in terms of a City Development Manager. Not only does she have first-hand experience of both Edinburgh and Stirling, she also has a wealth of knowledge of the telecoms industry and how it is continuing to evolve.

Our ‘fibre to the premises’ programme is going to be a game changer in both cities and nobody is better placed than Elaine to drive home that message and help people to discover more about the impact this investment will have on the city’s digital future.”
