Does a G.Fast install come with the Huawei MT992 modem?
« on: September 08, 2018, 11:55:51 AM »

I've been happy with my two box solution (HG612 + Asus AC68u) since getting 80/20 FTTC many years ago.

My ISP is going to be offering G.Fast from 17th September and i'm happy with the monthly price and speeds (250-300 estimated), but I'm wondering what I get for the £55 install that they are charging.

From reading around, it seems like I can continue with a 2 box solution and I'll get a MT992 to replace the HG612 that I have - but has anyone had a recent G.Fast install that can confirm things?

It depends on the ISP.

BT don't provide a Huawei MT992 but will provide a BT SmartHub X instead.

I'm not aware of any others who have their own CPE yet. They will have OpenReach provide you with a Huawei MT992.

To add with the BT Hub I believe it isn't possible to use another router without double NAT.

edit: was this a mistake?

No mistake, my ISP don't currently offer G.Fast, but I know someone in sales there who has informed me that their products go live on the 17th and I've got prices and everything ;)

I'm under a promise not to say who it is though!

Looks like it will be a MT992 for me if that is what Openreach are installing when they visit

May I ask to which year does your "17th May" refer?  :D

You will have an Openreach technician visit to replace the existing NTE5 (& any associated faceplate) with a NTE5C ( :yuck: ) and G.Fast faceplate.

Out of interest, what exactly is a G.Fast faceplate?  How does that differ from a A/VDSL faceplate?  If there is no voice service on the lines, is it still optional, in the same way as A/VDSL?

Wow - which part of my brain did that come from to type May in the OP and then not spot it when someone pointed it out! I'm sure a psychologist would identify some significance to what my unconscious brain is doing!

Apologies all, I meant September and have edited the opening post.

Interesting that this comes with a new box and faceplate - are there any significant differences in form or function?

I think we've all missed the obvious, at one time or another.  :)

I know that a specific G.Fast face-plate has been made . . . I've got an image of one, somewhere. I just can't find it, at the moment. As for what the difference will be, internally, electronically, I can only guess -- as I have never seen one in real life.

If no voice service will ever be operational on the circuit then yes, it can be regarded as unnecessary.

I expect, in terms of the electronics, there will be an optimised band pass filter for the telephony frequencies. Then a small band stop filter, followed by a highly optimised band pass filter for the full range of xDSL frequencies. One feature that I expect to be prominent is enhanced common-mode rejection capabilities over the entire xDSL bandwidth.

That last feature may prove to be a necessity . . . That is to say the positives from having the G.Fast faceplate installed, for its common-mode rejection rejection capabilities, is greater than the negatives, the small insertion loss, caused by the band pass, band stop and band pass filters.  :-\

It's an NTE5C with an MK4 style SSFP

Thank you very much for all the additional information.

2 final questions that I've thought of:

1) is there just one brand/model of modem now so I don't need to make sure I get a Huawei in the same way I tried to when getting FTTC when they were dishing out both ECI and Huawei hardware
2) Are openreach going to take the FTTC modem back with them as I believe it is their property? If so, I got landed with an ECI modem from the initial install on my Huawei cab and had to get a Huawei 6123b one from fleabay - so i'll make sure they get the ECI one back!

Looking forward to ordering this when the system is live next Monday :)

I believe there were some other modems used during the initial trials, but these days they are using a white Huawei MT992.
They are locked and no access to stats. :(

During my daughter's install the engineer replaced the existing NTE5,  plugged in the MT992 and attached it to the ISP provided Fritz!box.
No they don't take away the old hardware or even ask about it.

The choice of combined units to be able to get stats is very limited - practically zilch.
If it were my line I'd be saving up for an ASUS DSL-AC88U   Whilst ASUS has a good reputation for routers, they havent been so good when it comes to modems for which they have tended to use MediaTek chipsets.   The newer DSL-AC88U has a more familiar BCM chipset, but unfortunately is rather pricey at circa £200. :(

For anyone who's interested, I've posted pictures of a MT992's PCB here.
