i'd rather it was reported and found to be a false alarm, than ignored and later found to be a boat in distress.
surely only an idiot would disagree with that.

The movement of Mars across the sky is imperceptible over the course of several minutes.
A flare is only visible, moving relatively quickly, for a matter of seconds.
I tend to agree with Weaver.   ;)
