TP-LINK AC2600 vs AC2800 Chipsets
« on: August 23, 2018, 06:38:50 PM »

Hi everyone

I wonder if you could help. 2 years ago I purchased the TP-Link AC2600 (also know as the VR2600) as advised by this forum as contained the Broadcom chipset that was best compatible with the cabinet I connect to. Which is does as it always syncs higher than the crappy BT Smarthub

I was just wondering if the AC2800 (also known as VR2800) contains the same chipset?

It's been a solid modem router and was just looking to upgrade to the newer version.

Many thanks in advance.

They're different.

VR2600 contains 63168.
VR2800 contains 63138 (or maybe 63137) - the same as the BT SmartHub. This is the newer chip.

There will be many other factors besides the DSL chipset that affect the performance of the modem.

Thanks for the info, that's interesting.

My current AC2600 syncs higher than the BT Business Smarthub, So I'm wondering if the AC2800 is worth it if it has the same chipset. What else hardware wise would cause my Ac2600 to sync at a higher rate?

Thanks again

Things like the design of the circuit board, the quality of the analogue components used, how much interference its power supply emits.

Although older, the 63168 is probably considered the best DSL chip, but then the 63138 is less common and many of the devices using it don't support the advanced stats gathering so its performance doesn't get scrutinised so closely.

OP,

You're better off sticking with the VR2600, any improvement in your sync rate by going for the VR2800 will be very small (if at all) so not worth the extra expense. I'm sure you're getting great wifi coverage on the VR2600, this will be due to the Qualcomm Atheros (QCA) radios which the VR2600 uses. However the VR2800 uses Broadcom radios which sometimes throw up compatability problems with certain wifi clients. Also Mu-Mimo works quite well on QCA based routers whilst its hit and miss on Broadcom units. If it aint broke.....  :)
