I saw that on the 6:00 news - such a shame. Seems like it might have been a domestic incident, and they have someone under arrest already.

Stories like that always make me think what a pointless waste of a young life.  I don't cry often, but things like that make me weep.

I received a "Policing in your Neighbourhood" newsletter today and a couple of highlights are:

Quote
1. Total recorded crime is down 10.9%, 30,345 fewer victims of crime.
2. Detection rates fell slightly to 26.5% against 26.6% last year.

1. Of course the recorded crime figures are down, people are too frightened to make reports.
2. So does this mean that 73.5% of reported crimes are still unsolved.

Oh yes, as for the information of what happened in March 2005 is a little on the outdated side now.

IMO the biggest stumbling block in street crime/underage drinking is the old'can't be named for legal reasons'.There is never any legal reasons objected to naming the victim laying in the morgue/or intensive care.
These people should have their names and photo's plastered all over local/national newspapers and in public places. Then perhaps their parents might accept that it is their child who is doing this, instead of the 'its not mine ,he/she would never do anything like this'
We talk about all this on the forum and I'm in no doubt that these topic's get talked about by you every week all over the country in shops, pubs,on the bus etc.We the British public know what needs to be done,so why can't the people we elected to run this country see that.

Totally and absolutely agree with you Unc.... plus name and shame the parents, make them pay for any damage etc and if they won't pay - jail 'em.... sorry but harsh measures are needed.... zero tolerance might just make a difference though IMO there's much more to be done and that's starting from scratch (going back to how things should be) but we can't do that because people wouldn't like the restrictions.... rant rant rant.

I reckon that could be quite effective. Especially with anti-social behaviour.

Lock them in the *stocks outside the town hall for 24 hours - that should deter them from further misdemeanours.

*with a handy heap of rotting fruit & veg nearby

I'm completely in agreement that parents should be made responsible for the behaviour of their children, but that isn't very easy today.  My brother, who lost his wife to cancer when his children were 10 - 16, did everything in his power to stop his youngest daughter going off the rails when she was fourteen, she complained to the social worker at school about the restrictions he was placing on her going out, and the end result was that she elected to go into 'care' where she was allowed to do as she wished.

This took place in a small town where he was able to see this child hanging around pubs, and before too long becoming pregnant, and not being able to so much as speak to her.  Into the bargain he was charged a small fortune weekly for her upkeep

Have things turned out better now? Does your niece have a good relationship with her family now?
(I hope so.)

If that's what our social workers think is best for the child and her family, then no wonder our society is as screwed up as it is.
