Oblong
« on: August 11, 2018, 11:08:08 AM »

When you were tiny, did some teachers tick children off for using the word 'oblong' and telling them to say 'rectangle'? Why was that?

Was that if the child use 'oblong' as a noun and the teacher considered it to be an adjective only? Just completely guessing about that. Or was it just general?

I don't remember anyone getting ticked off, but it's always been my strong preference to use 'rectangle', so I guess that came from my education somewhere along the way. My two Oxford dictionaries define 'oblong' when used as a noun as "oblong figure or object"...

I thought it was ok as a noun or adjective, and wiktionary agrees.
