This is after Plusnet sent me one of their routers rather than the Home hub 5 I used to use (ironically the same model) but I imagine different firmware. Is this the known issue with these routers and Huawei cabinets?

Literally in the time it took to type this its disconnected twice more and even though it says 'User request' it definitely isn't being disconnected by me.

If this is a router issue, what router would you guys suggest that plays nice with Huawei cabinets, can install dd-wrt and has half decent range as I live in a flat with solid walls everywhere.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Isitari.

Welcome to the forum, Isitari!

I am assuming that this is some glitch to do with BT further upstream or with your ISP. I can't see how the Huawei cab would even know about it as I assume it knows nothing about PPP. (Unless some lower-layer event is causing PPP to behave like this, but I do not see that.) PPP is talking to a BT server miles away initially and then all the way to PlusNet (only) from then on. But anyway I do not know what I am talking about so do not listen to me.

My reasoning is because PPP is above, and nothing to do with, DSL. Indeed, PPP was used 20 years ago, in the days of dial-up all the time, even when there was no DSL.

I honestly do not think that changing kit will make any difference bar some one-off bad software release. I think it is all the ISP's fault.

There are lots of good Broadcom-chipset-based routers that will suit your needs and I am sure members will have recommendations.

As for wireless, would you consider getting additional 'wireless access points' (WAPs), chosen just for their wireless performance alone? Because then with one or more of them you can place them where you want for best coverage in view of your internal solid walls. You just plug them into your wireless or wireful router with an ethernet cable, and you may even, if you prefer, turn a wireless router's wireless off if your chosen access points are miles better.

[edit: J0hn has subsequently pointed out that my comments were just all rubbish, thank goodness someone is with it.]

I wonder if there is more happening, but the router is not finding out about it.

The modem logs show both the DSL link and the PPP session being down.

The logs are from the OP's Plusnet Hub One (A rebadged BT HH5A). This is a combined modem and router so would know if both the DSL link and PPP session went down or not.

I don't know if DD-WRT can be used for DSL?
I think you need to use a separate VDSL2 modem with a router with DD-WRT installed.

I always recommend a 2 box solution anyway.
Ideally the modem should be configured, synced with the cabinet, then left alone.
You can play with the router to your hearts content, dropping the PPP session as many times as you want, and the DSL link between the modem and the cabinet stays in sync.

I recommend any modem with a BCM63168 chipset to get maximum sync on your Huawei cabinet.

I would say shove the Plusnet Hub One back in its box before the Dynamic Line Management (DLM) starts adjusting the line parameters (which could lead to a speed loss). It may even be too late now to prevent it from making some changes. Like j0hn said, it's a rebagged Home Hub 5A. It uses a Lantiq chipset which seems to be inferior to Broadcom (BCM) in terms of stability and performance for some people.

An example I have is one of the lines here, dispite being < 200m from the cabinet (Huawei!), with the Plusnet Hub One (including a replacement that was sent out) performed like utter garbage with regular drop outs, high error rates and an eventual drop in sync speed due to the DLM increasing the margin (and interleaving, I think). I immediately swapped out for a Broadcom-based device (Billion 8800NL v1) and it was a long road to getting the near/full 80/20 Mbps back. Perhaps it does not help matters that there is apparently some aluminium on the D-side (distribution, from the cabinet) for that line, so perhaps you may have a similar condition.

The Home Hub 5 that you previously used there may have been a 5B model (perhaps you can check and verify that for us), and that has the BCM63168 chipset that j0hn has suggested as a good chipset to get maximum sync. You should be able to use Home Hubs on Plusnet connections anyway or at least that was the case some time ago (not sure about the latest Hubs), and if you do have the 5B I would advise that you use it until you can find a two-device setup that suits you (because Broadcom do not release public drivers, custom firmware cannot incorperate DSL drivers; you are going to need to opt for a setup where you have a seperate modem and router device if you want to use a Broadcom-based device).

Thanks to J0hn, who is quite right. It says PTM is down too. PTM is the link layer above physical DSL. I was in so much pain when I wrote that, I could hardly see the page, so ignore my comments. I did not know what I was on about, but have since taken a lot of different pain killers.

Thanks for the help and advice guys. Engineer turned up unexpectedly didn't find any faults and suggested it could be the dreaded REIN as he'd had other people with similar DC'ing issues to the same cabinet. Plusnet still want to send out another engineer again so we'll see what happens.

From now on I'll also connect using the original FTTC box as my HH5 is annex A sadly.

Thanks for the advice guys,

Isitari.

Edit: seems my router is Annex B? 'Modulation:   G.993.2 Annex B' ?

That's just how it connects. We all connect using Annex B.

It should tell you on the sticker underneath if it is a Home Hub 5A or 5B.
