Sky Q Hub Wireless dropouts
« on: July 31, 2018, 08:33:36 PM »

Good evening All,

Hope you are well.
I'm looking for assistance in an issue that a relative is seeing with their Sky Q Hub.
They have come to me with an issue where their devices are constantly dropping from the WiFi. He states that on his PS4 he basically has a ping of 300ms+, Can't use shareplay now, His connection speed is less than 1Mb down and around 500kb Up. The stats themselves for the fibre connection look good with approx 34/8 on a 3dB profile so it isn't a line fault.

Having a look online, There seems to be loads of people experiencing similar issues. So far, I have changed the wireless channels and split the 2.4 and 5Ghz channels but the issue remains.

Has anyone experienced this before and possibly have a work around?

Many thanks

probably the only work around is to replace the sky kit with your own. Bear in mind sky have certain requirements which your router must support such as option 61 on the wan port.
popular solutions are Asus decent router only devices running merlin firmware (allows option 61 requirement and easy to configure) and a cheap vdsl modem..

I know there are probably all in one type units but for me a 2 box solution is preferred.

Hi there,

Thanks for the information.
I've got a spare eci modem and a spare hg612 (would prefer to keep that as my spare) and I'm sure they can purchase a router.
I'll speak to them about this and see what they think.

If you need the config for merlin let me know . It's straight forward and works. My rt88 has excellent wifi signal.
List of supported devices for merlin below.

eci modem should work fine.

Excellent. Thank you. I'll be sure to let them know this option is available.
Just for my own information, is there an issue with the sky Q box? There seems to be a lot of threads all reporting similar issues with WiFi dropouts

never used one . I have seen  this issue though on one of the sky groups I follow a number of times. most seem to just end up replacing it with their own kit provided it's got option 61 support

Ok thanks.
It does seem common. They are a bit dismayed due to having no issues whatsoever with sky broadband in the past. It's only since upgrading to fibre and sky Q.

Hi both, excuse me butting in but I am having the same problem. Dropouts and extremely slow handshake just trying to connect. Once online (Sky basic fibre) upload and download speeds are ok.

Unfortunately it seems to be a common problem. There are loads of threads with the same issue on the sky forums with no apparent fix.

Have a look here

After speaking to my relative yesterday. Apparently they have not seen any drop outs yesterday after I have changed a few settings.

Firstly, I logged into the router.
Unchecked the box for joining the 2.4 and 5Ghz channels.
Renamed the 2.4Ghz channel so it totally separated it.

I then went into the Sky Q TV box and mini TV boxes and performed the following.

select home button on remote
scroll down to settings
now type 0,0,1 then select for a hidden menu.
go to network
at bottom you see 5GHz channel 36 / 80MHz
change this to channel 36 / 40MHz and save

One final thing that was suggested to me was to make sure you were actually connecting to the routers WiFi and not the TV box WiFi. I'm guessing by switching off all the TV boxes then selecting your network.
