HG612 with BT Fibre
« on: July 29, 2018, 11:28:08 AM »

Hi everyone,

I've got a pfsense router and I currently have a home hub 4. It's worked ok but I want to set it up better. As a result I've bought a hg612 which I've since unlocked.

I'm hoping to get it setup shortly but is it better to setup the hg612 to handle the pppoa authentication or do it in the pfsense?

I've been looking on the forum but could not really find a clear answer.

Many thanks

just use the modem as a modem. let pfsense do everything else.

Thanks for the reply. So just set it up as pppoe and get the router to handle the authentication.

do nothing to the modem. just plug it in. connect your pfsense box to port 1 on the modem  via it's wan port. Then configure the wan port on pfsense to ppoe with the usual bt username and password. setup dns if you wish or let it use the ones provided.I have a second Opnsense box connected to my mums bt infinity with ipv4 and ipv6 under Opnsense. It's very straightforward to get your ipv4 connection up.

As mentioned above, do not change a single setting on the modem.

Unlock it, change nothing, use it.
It's default config is already setup as a bridge modem.

A factory reset will restore any changes you may have made that you are unsure of.

Thanks for the replies everyone and thank you for the welcome. I will give it a blast tonight. I will reset to defaults first in case and go from there. I've been reading about opnsense and it does sound quite interesting.

Thanks again

Hi all.

I set it up tonight and all went perfectly. The hg612 3b gets quite warm so I'm thinking about adding a fan to keep it cool.

Thanks again for your help everyone.
