VDSL Modem-Ethernet Bridge questions
« on: November 08, 2022, 01:20:11 PM »

Hi. I'm new here. I used to work with PCs and networking many moons ago, but now I'm very rusty indeed. I need help and advice, please.

My Asus DSL-AC68U router recently lost its DSL capability. Possibly by a mains spike.

The Zen-supplied Fritz!Box 3490 isn't as good, so I ended up using it as a WAN router*, disabling WiFi and other unnecessary stuff, and chaining it to the Asus, which still works perfectly well as router and pseudo NAS. It's not ideal, but it works. Speedtest says I've lost some speed, and my router shelf looks like a dog's dinner.

So, I thought I'd look into replacing the Fritz with an old school DSL modem. That way, I could replace the Asus with a dedicated router further down the line. I thought this would be easy, but I may have opened a can of worms...

FYI, according to Fritz, my exchange appears to be Infineon "Infineon 13.2.6" (ECI?) and I'm on 40/10mbps VDSL2. I always thought DSL modems were cheap, but apparently you can pay nearly 200 quid for one—more than my router cost. I just want something which works reliably, and gives me back my 37.5mbps.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Dinosaur Keith

[* Before you ask, I did look into turning the Fritz into an ethernet bridge, but I couldn't see any way to do this in the menus.]

Try and find a HG612 on eBay about £15 old modem but very good used by lots of posters here.

Should I not be using an ECI/Lantiq based modem with my ETI cabinet? Or does it not really matter?

Lantiq based:

I can not recommend the ECI V3503J unless you are comfortable soldering capacitors

You've come to the right place.

I'll second g3uiss' suggestion. Just get yourself a Huawei HG612 3B (and don't pay a premium price for it).

Its not a problem, but I always felt things loaded faster with a Lantiq modem even though I couldn't scientifically prove it.  I believe it also synced slightly faster.
