Battery Connector Frustration
« on: July 24, 2018, 08:43:42 PM »

Gubbins (a different one) is powered by a 9V battery of the PP3 size. The snap-fit connector is decidedly "iffy" and requires replacement. A simple job . . . so it seemed. The plan of action involved purchasing the minimum quantity of the connectors (preferably just one), snip through the wires as close as possible to the existing connector, strip back the insulation and solder the wires to the new connector. Finally slip an insulating "jacket" over the newly fitted connector.

Can I find a source of the connectors without pre-fitted leads?    :(

eBay gives me in excess of 800 different sellers. Amazon is typically Amazon. It gave me three different sources with pre-fitted wires, then pages of listings for wheelbarrows (with and without wheels), dog leads, emergency attack alarms, ladies' leg-waxing kits . . . (Why, Amazon, why?), RS Components had two types, both with pre-fitted leads, and those available from Proto-Pic were similar to those from RS Components. Maplin is no more . . .  :wall:

Any suggestions, please?

Not sure about the ones you're looking at, but the last time I bought PP3 connectors they came with leads on, but the plastic header case pops apart and you could solder your own leads of if needs be:

Ah, that's interesting.

The four different types that I was shown can be described as with vinyl coverings or solid plastic casing (as your example) and with either a T or end presentation of the wires to the connectors.

Another mode of connection would be to shorten the provided wires somewhat, slip some heat-shrink insulation over each individual wire and then make soldered wire to wire joins.

Once upon a time I was young, and interested in electronics.  I had many projects on my wish list, but always constrained by available pocket money, hence an incentive for thrift.

Pretty sure, when a PP3 connector was needed, a zero cost option was to take apart an existing (dead) battery, and liberate the headers.   This yielded a connector to which wires could be soldered.   It didn’t work for long, being intended as a single-use connector, and solder did not adhere easily to the terminal’s rivets, but it did work. ;)

That would of course have been in the days of zinc-carbon batteries.   Doing so nowadays, with modern alkaline batteries, may be more hazardous or just not possible, really not sure.

That is the sort of solution I would have also used and so I can only say that the heat must have addled my brain when I made the initial post, yesterday evening.

Exactly the item required. Thank you for the link. In exchange, I have dispatched some (un-licked) kitteh treats for you . . .  :)

b*cat is gloomy.

Not only will they require me to enter all sorts of personal details to create an account but the total cost to own just one of those connectors will be --

Goods Subtotal:    £0.49
Delivery:          £0.00
Handling Charge:   £3.50
VAT:               £0.80
Total:             £4.79

Have you had a look at Tandy Online?

I hadn't but now I have. Thank you for the suggestion but that is not what I want. I want a connector without any pre-fitted leads; one to solder onto the leads of the gubbins.

I orderred from CPC just last week, and I was able to check out as ‘guest’. :-\

They offer free delivery over £8 iirc so, if there are any treats on your wish list, make up the order?
Downside is, they offer ‘same day dispatch’, which is a bit irrelevant as actual delivery is usually 3 or 4 days after ‘dispatch’.

I prefer rswww.com who offer free and genuine next day delivery (via parcel force, in my recent  experience) with no minimum spend, but I think you already established they did not have the goods?

I went back to the RS site armed with the manufacturer's name (Keystone) and item number (68). Upon entering the same into the search bar, I was offered the opportunity to purchase a bag of five for a total price of £3.12, free delivery.

I accepted and performed the purchase as a guest.

Kitteh treats have also been dispatched to 7LM:)

I look forwards to the treats.

I had forgotten that RS do often have minimum quantities.   Not so much as to impact overall price as per item is often nearly nothing, but enough that I am left with an assortment of incredibly inexpensive capacitors, because I wanted only one of each but had to buy several of each. ::)

In fact, an additional overhead emerges later... I have recently purchase a large (but minimum) quantity of incredibly inexpensive self seal plastic bags, to help me to organise my collection of incredibly inexpensive left over components, that I will probably never use. :D
