Huawei equipment could pose a threat to national security, senior British security officials have cautioned.

Intelligence experts say they can only provide limited assurances that the Chinese company is not a risk to broadband and phone networks in the UK.

The recommendation will be made in an as-yet unpublished annual report signed off by the GCHQ spy agency, according to inside sources.

Huawei, one of the world's biggest producer of telecoms systems, is a major supplier of broadband and mobile telephone network equipment in Britain.

The latest finding will likely intensify the espionage debate around the Shenzhen-based company, which has come previously under fire in the US and Australia.

One US official has claimed Huawei is effectively an arm of the Chinese government, and is more than capable of stealing information by hacking consumer devices.

I know this is from the daily mail. But I just read it today and got me thinking, is there any reason why OR / BT, can't create generic version of the Huawei technology they use?

I know this is from the daily mail.

There's been concerns over the use of Huawei equipment for years and possible backdoors.  The following article perhaps gives more reliable and up to date info

https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-huawei-security-britain-exclusive/exclusive-britain-says-huawei-shortcomings-expose-new-telecom-networks-risks-idUKKBN1K92BO

Reading between the lines it would appear HCSEC has found something they are not happy with  "they had identified technical issues which limited security researchers’ ability to check internal product code"  which to me implies they found something that they can't check out because it's hidden/obfuscated/crypted.   Whether what they found is bad or not, then no-one has any idea...  which I guess leads to the question what is hidden and why..  which understandably leads to suspicion.

Huawei don't appear to be denying it and their response is "The Oversight Board has identified some areas for improvement in our engineering processes.".  A programme to resolve the code issue was underway and should be completed by mid-2020.
