Pangur Bān jumped off Janet's shoulder straight onto the hot plate of the Rayburn (stove) this morning. He was not on there long. Shaking with fear even many hours later, he has cuddled up to Caoimhe and is giving her a big wash.

I know people like to keep agas/rayburns on most of the time... but in this heat?!  ???

Janet was cooking breakfast this morning - it normally is turned down to nothing and has the lids down.

The heatwave is finally gone here. Everything is shrouded in waves of thick mist and fine rain. A friend of mine has come back to Scotland with his family and has rented a cottage on the mainland just in time to miss the good weather, if you like sunshine and heat that is.

Neighbours are desperate because of the drought, I cannot imagine where they are getting their water from, perhaps buying bottled water in big containers and filling toilets up with seawater or something, but it would all mean a lot of manual labour.

We have a deep borehole so are unique in that our water is never in any danger. We tend to get a drought every May early June, but it has been a bit later and more severe this year. We also have several huge tanks.

That sounds heavenly... its been unbearable down here the past few days.

Do you filter the borehole water to make it potable, or is it just naturally pure?

The borehole after comes from a limestone layer deep down that extends out from underneath the hill Beinn nan Cārn to the west, high above the house. We do not need to filter it as it is extremely pure apart from the high levels of calcium compounds in it, a phenomenon which keeps threatening to damage equipment by coating with lime scale. We and my next door neighbour jointly paid for it twelve years ago and having clean reliable water for the first time has been a blessing.
