Mobile operator Vodafone has countered EE’s announcement of a 5G trial in London by confirming that they too will be testing the future 1Gbps capable mobile technology between October and December 2018, albeit in 7 UK cities: Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Manchester.

Sadly at the time of writing Vodafone hasn’t told us anything about their proposed network setup or what spectrum band they will be trialling (we have asked), although they’ve already made use of both the 3.4GHz and 3.5GHz bands in recent tests.

We suspect that the operator’s forthcoming deployment will be more focused on delivering “ultrafast” Gigabit speeds via a 5G Fixed Wireless Broadband setup to specific premises, rather than one for the more traditional mobile environment (the necessary end-user kit, such as mobile handsets, simply doesn’t exist yet).

Nick Jeffery, CEO of Vodafone UK, said:

“We want to make 5G and new fibre broadband services available to consumers and business throughout the UK, delivering a Gigabit society for all. We will also be bringing ultra-fast 4G to several hundred sites in hard to reach rural areas this year, building on our position as the network that offers the best voice coverage in the UK.”

Vodafone seem to be positioning themselves to be at the forefront of both Ultrafast fibre, and now this 5G technology. It looks like in the next roll out of full fibre technology they will have established a solid base.

Perhaps after the BT buyout BT is hard up, simply because of all the cash they had to stump up to fund the buyout?

Yes that sort of thing tends to happen, you buy the company then realise afterwards you need to recover the cash, but also EE and BT as companies had different mindsets, EE was pro capital expenditure, BT is not.

Sounds like EE will simply lose all of the perceived or ‘PR’ marketing edge that they had, of being the place to go to get the best, leading-edge technology and very highest performance first, ahead of the competition. And now when that is squandered, users will lose that idea and there won't ben any reason to choice EE rather than anyone else. But will have succeeded in taking the Porsche brand and turning it into Volkswagen.

Yeah, there is a fair few angry EE customers that BT took it over, as they probably predicted that levels of capital expenditure would drop, of course I dont know if this has has actually happened.

Have I misunderstood?   We're having a discussion that EE is lagging behind on capital expenditure and new technology.

6th June 2018 - EE Prepare First Live UK Trial of 5G Wireless Broadband in London
Quote
Mobile operator EE has today announced that it will switch on the “UK’s first” live trial of their new prototype 5G based ultrafast wireless broadband network at 10 sites around London’s Tech City area.

“This live trial is a big step forward in making the benefits of 5G a reality for our customers, and in making sure that the UK is at the front of the pack for 5G technology."
