Replace HG612
« on: June 15, 2018, 06:58:50 PM »

I'm looking to replace my HG612's one is on ADSL2 and one on VDSL. I monitor with DSL stats. It seems the recommended kit is the ZyXEL VMG8324-B10A, but I only need modems as I use a Draytec 2925 in a loadbalance setup and very happy with that. I think the ZyXEL is a bit expensive to use in Bridge mode ? I thgink my HG612's have given great sevice but perhaps a bit outdated now. Do the recommended ones need hacking for Telnet access for use with DSL stats ?

You can pick up the Zyxel 8324/8924 at very reasonable prices on eBay if you don't mind second hand and are patient.
Admittedly they are bit overkill if you're only going to use as a modem, but if the price is right......
It's the much loved VMG1312-B10A model that seems to be getting pretty expensive now.

I can still see the odd VMG 1312-B10A for under £100 but prices are going through the roof.

There is a reason why prices are so very high, they are good. I am not sure that some of the other ZyXels are not equally good though?

And I don’t know if the B10A has any advantage when used for VDSL2? I want them for the ultra-long line ADSL2 performance.

Not only is the 1312 good on VDSL2 lines it is also a discontinued device, so harder to source.

I think I am perhaps a little late to the party in this instance (I think I need to clear my cookies because the site kept logging me out even though I stated not to, and I was too lazy to log back in).

I'm surprised that you would like to replace your HG612s. Perhaps they are a bit old, but if it ain't broke... ;)

Anyway, it is possible to source a Billion BiPac 8800NL on the bay for under £30 including delivery these days (used, of course, and they only come around every now and then). Heck, you can even get the 8800NL R2 (an updated version) for usually a little over the £30 mark if you have insane patience.

Both modem/router combos have a Broadcom chipset (BCM63168 for the former and BCM63381 for the latter) and have Telnet and SSH access to retrieve stats (and no unlocking is necessary). I've used the 8800NL with both DSLStats and HG612 Modem Stats and I can confirm that they are both compatible (and there is no reason with the latter revision should differ).

The only (perhaps minor) downside is that the aforementioned combos are not BT SIN 498 approved unlike the Zyxel devices mentioned by other forum users. However, I cannot see it being much of an issue because:
  • As far as I am aware, there is no enforcement to use approved devices
  • There should be no issue as the 8800NL & 8800NL R2 are using the same DSL chipsets as the Zxyel devices mentioned by other users (of course the implementation matters, but Billion is reputable)

I have used the 8800NL as a modem-only device and as a router, so I can confirm that it does a pretty decent job (and it's even better if you can find it cheap).

I am not aware of any other devices that could be cheaper, but perhaps someone here could make a suggestion if they know. :)

The 8800 V1 is a good suggestion but the V2 (R2) is a poor performer certainly sync wise on my line losing about 5 mbits compared to the 1312 ZyXEL models. Also the Billions dont have an internal RF filter like the 1312, 8324 and 8924 have. If you want to squeeze the absolute most out of the sync of your line with minimum errors or DLM intervention then the ZyXels are the ones to go for. I also have a VMG3925 by ZyXEL but that doesn't have an internal filter and performs less well.
