Can some devices generate a load of interference over a very wide range ? For example enough to stuff up > 2 MHz worth of spectrum ? Or 20 MHz worth?

Anything which sparks, e.g. unsuppressed vehicle ignition systems.

Sparking produces wide band interference which can potentially range from a few hertz to a few gigahertz. But I repeat, I'm no expert.

A square wave or step function has a Fourier transform with components going on up for ever of course, as 1/
f
iirc. So it will extend some way up.
