Beware of phone call scams
« on: May 23, 2018, 01:54:32 PM »

Just thought I'd mention here that I've had three phone calls on my landline today, withheld number, all from someone with an Indian accent claiming to be from Openreach and I'm apparently not getting the speed I should be getting. I didn't fall for it. Watch out for these types of calls.

If I get one more call like it very soon then I think I'll invest in getting a new Truecall device, or something like Truecall anyway.

A friend of mine in his eighties fell for one like that recently and handed over control of his PC to the caller. I told him in no uncertain terms that he should know better, and to immediately use a different PC to change bank passwords etc. After that I told him to remove the hard disk from the machine which he had handed over control of, and attack it with a very big hammer, then get a new hard disk and reinstall his OS.

Thank me later.

Thanks but I had considered that, I don't believe it is capable of also doing VoIP though? I suppose I could keep the Gigaset on VoIP though, as they don't appear to get any 'nuisance' calls via VoIP currently.

I had just such a call at work yesterday, I listened to what they had to say, then said "Thanks very much for calling back, yes we have had problems with our internet", strangely they hung up

Roseway is absolutely right: Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.
