Standalone VDSL2 modem for mesh wifi
« on: April 27, 2018, 12:34:20 PM »

Hi everyone

I'm after a bit of guidance please. I looking at purchasing a mesh wifi solution, like the Netgear Orbi or Eero.

None of the solution I've looked at have a build in VDSL2 modem. Can anyone recommend a good standalone VDSL2 modem to use with such a setup. Or if anyone has already set up one of these mesh wifi networks, how they went about doing it and hardware used.

Many thanks

I'm using BT whole-home wifi, which needs a modem/router rather than just a modem.  Works fine with both a Billion 8900AX-2400 and a Zyxel VMG8924-B10A.  Worth checking whether (e.g.) the Orbi provides routing functionality itself or also needs a modem/router.

I use the Amplifi HD mesh wifi by Ubiquiti and it works perfectly fine. You can set it to 'bridge mode' and just have your current router manage the IP address allocation, routing, NAT, etc. You can also set it to 'router mode' should you prefer the Amplifi device to handle that stuff instead. It will do PPPoE, but it doesn't have a built-in modem.

I can't suggest a mesh system with a modem built-in, I've not heard of such a solution, sorry.

I have a Netgear Orbi conneceted to a ZyXel VMG1312-B10A in bridge mode (with a HG612B as a backup option if ever required).

Works well for me

The latest Fritzbox 7590 modem router supports mesh, a bit pricey, but then you get a lot of features for the money, whether you use them or not.

If you buy one, get the UK version for sale on Amazon

Good to know of another happy bridge-mode user of the VMG-1312-B10A then.
