DashCams
« on: April 19, 2018, 02:12:46 PM »

Looking for a good quality cheap Dashcam.

But it is not going to be used as a Dashcam !.

We have a Vauxhall Mokka X 1.6 CDTi 136 ps, with Stop/Start.  new from last September, from the first week of using it we have had problem after problem, I gave our dealers a list of 12 Intermittent problems with the car  :(, they had it in again for the forth time for two weeks and can not find any problem !  :'(.

I have also sent an email to the CEO of Vauxhall uk.

One of the most serious and could be very dangerous, is the lack of throttle response with the engine not responding until up to 15 seconds, and sometimes the engine just stopping (not a stall a gentle shut down).
This could happen at any speed in any gear.
I want to mount the dashcam in the back looking at the driver and the Rev counter and Speedometer etc.
I need to get some proof of these things happening.

Sympathies, we had a Polo from new which, for quite some time, exhibited similar symptoms, not apparently believed by the local franchised dealer.   They simply plugged it into diagnostics, which reported all was well.  “Computer says ‘No’”.  So they’d send us off reassured all was well, when it never was.  They did replace random bits’n’bobs under new car warranty but they were just guessing, as the computer wouldn’t tell them what was wrong, and they never fixed it.

Trouble is, if the dealer doesn’t believe you, and doesn’t want to believe you, will the dash cam persuade him?   He’ll see the car slowing, or stopping -  but will there be any evidence of a fault, or could he claim it must be driver initiated?

In the end, with our Polo, we took it away from the franchised dealer network and had it serviced by a well regarded local VW independent specialist, who was not totally dependent on computer diagnostics.   Fixed, at first Attempt.

There are 12 computing modules on the car and I think it is a software problem  :(  but all 12 faults are intermittent and are not going to be easy to find, Like you say the video will only show the effect not the cause of the fault.
But has normal the dealers and Vauxhall always say there is No fault.
I belong to a 'Mokka' internet forum and there must be about 20 other people had some of our same problems .
This chap had one of our problems https://youtu.be/_pqnYl4COPM  people had been reporting this since 2013  :'(

Any recommendations for a Dashcam anybody.

How often does it do it?

You can get a recorder that plugs into the diagnostic socket, no idea how long they record for or if Vauxhaul dealers have them.

If the Vauxhall has an OBD II port then you want to get 1 of these. Just search eBay for OBD II and you'll find cheap Chinese knock offs for a few £ that can Bluetooth live info to a smartphone or laptop.

Anything intermittent that sends an error code will be picked up. You get apps that graph all the available data.

The main most dangerous problem (lack of engine response / gracefully shutting down while still traveling along) can happen 3 times in a few minutes or a few miles but it might not happen or only once in a hundred mile trip.  >:D

There have never been any error logs recorded !.

I have an OBD reader but never tried it on the Mokka because I was told the car needs a password for it to be used, Vauxhall said it is to stop the public using there own reader.

I have an old iphone4 so maybe I could rig that up to do a video per journey.

i just noticed, you say the car has stop/start.    Have you tried disabling stop/start for a few weeks, as a diagnostic experiment, to see if it affects the pattern?

For the duration of such an experiment you may have to get into the habit of disabling stop/start at the beginning of every journey, as I believe some cars automatically reenable it again when they think you are not looking.

Yes does have s/s and yes I have turned it off per journey for One month and the main problem did not happen, told the dealers in daily reports, some use it did.

Getting all sorts of odd things like windscreen wipers start by them self's or we can not turn the rear ones off, can not dip headlights, cars LCD digital display flashes bright / dim at odd times in daytime, WiFi goes off for no reason, parking sensors go off for no reason, seat belt warnings anther and lots more random odd things.
All run via a 'Data Bus'  :-\
