Line Stats, Switched From ECI to Huawei Modem
« on: April 26, 2018, 04:47:06 PM »

Hello,

I've had an ECI modem for a few years now connected to a Huawei cabinet (I think). I have never had great speeds, around 16-17mbit/s and I used to have a lot of modem disconnects last year for some reason though it is has stabilised now and doesn't seem to disconnect anymore. Unfortunately I'm really far from the cabinet, it is at the other end of the road to me.

Today I purchased a second hand HG612 3B in the hopes it would be faster due to matching the cabinet and supporting G.INP. However I've connected it and my speeds and ping seem exactly the same. I've attached my line stats if anyone can see anything wrong I'd greatly appreciate it.

Another interesting thing is that I had a second line installed last November that runs at about 20/21 Mbit/s which I found surprising, I don't have the line stats for this line yet but will get them when I get another HG612 3B as I don't want to upset DLM. I got the second line installed free as I was paying £25 p/m for BT sport and could get BT sport and internet on black Friday for £30 so I thought why not.

Stats for my Sky FTTC line:

Welcome to the Kitz forum. :)

From the statistics harvested from the HG612 modem we can see that your circuit does, indeed, connect to a Huawei equipped cabinet and that G.998.4 (a.k.a. G.Inp) is active.

Quote
                Down            Up
SNR (dB):        9.1             6.1

On seeing the above, that explains why the DS synchronisation (and, hence, throughput) speed is rather low. I suspect that a degree of patience will be required and, eventually, the DLM process may start to experiment with smaller values of the SNRM which should improve the synchronisation (and throughput) speed.

I would suggest the reason for the high SNRM value is that the line is banded (i.e. capped) at exactly 18Mbps download speed. You can ask Sky for a DLM reset which they may or may not be able to request from BT Openreach. I think it is still in a trial phase and some ISPs are not taking part. If you do manage to get a reset the banding should be removed but so will G.Inp and you will have to wait for that to be re-enabled by DLM for your speed to get back to your expected rate.

I'll give this a go. I think I contacted them once before on live chat and they didn't even know what DLM was unfortunately  >:( I'll try sending them an email with my stats and seeing what they say.

I agree with @RealAleMadrid, the line looks like it is banded.
I would suggest the reason for the high SNRM value is that the line is banded (i.e. capped) at exactly 18Mbps download speed.
Though I would suggest this line should also be capable of approx. the same speed as your other line under circumstances where the banding was removed and the SNR was at or below 6 dB (if the line remains stable). The reason why the line may be banded is because of this:
I have never had great speeds, around 16-17mbit/s and I used to have a lot of modem disconnects last year for some reason though it is has stabilised now and doesn't seem to disconnect anymore.
Perhaps you had a rough "patch" (some crosstalk) that just made your line unstable enough for the DLM to put you on a banded profile.

In reference to contacting Sky support:
I'll give this a go. I think I contacted them once before on live chat and they didn't even know what DLM was unfortunately  >:( I'll try sending them an email with my stats and seeing what they say.
I don't know the best method of approaching Sky, but with any ISP the first line support won't understand anything beyond a few basic tasks usually and considering the DLM reset is in trial, only some of the higher support lines will know about it. It's not their fault because they're not trained for it. I wouldn't overcomplicate it, but you probably won't get anything good until second line in reference to a DLM reset. Perhaps someone here knows the best way to progress a request that is not related to a fault to Sky's second line support. Maybe you could tell them that the modem you were using had gone faulty and caused line problems and has now been replaced?

The DLM should eventually sort itself out anyway with time, but there is no saying how long it will take as it depends on whether the line is within the defined error thresholds and other factors that are not publicly available. You can read more about the DLM here (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/DLM.htm).

I contacted Sky on live chat and via Email. Unfortunately they won't do a DLM reset. My contract ends mid May so I'm thinking of maybe switching to another FTTC provider. Would switching provider trigger a DLM reset?

If it's a different backhaul, yes. If it's downgrading to a lower speed limit, also yes.

Got through to Sky and they did some tests and said my line has a LN- Battery contact fault. Should be fixed within 3-5 days, maybe this is why my speed never recovered from all the disconnects last year due to it being faulty.

I woke up today with no broadband on either line so restarted them both and they both started working. Sky line is the same speed as before but now I have a fault on the secondary BT line, no dial tone and slow internet. Is it possible they have switched the Sky and BT line? Unsure what is going on.

So Sky supposedly sent an Openreach engineer to fix the LN battery issue. This was supposedly fixed and then my BT line became faulty immediately after, no dial tone and half speed internet. BT sent an OpenReach engineer to fix the line fault.

The BT line is now running at it's best ever speed, around 25.5-26mbit/s! I'm quite surprised I've managed to get this speed.

The Sky line however remains the same as when I first posted the stats. Sky are sending another Openreach engineer out on the 15th May to check my line again. If the line can't get above 18000kbps I think i'll just cancel it as I'm getting 10000kbps faster on my BT line which is now enough bandwidth for the household with a bit of QOS. It would mean I could also get rid of Dual WAN config on my router which will be one less thing to manage.

Just a quick update on this. I did manage eventually to get an Openreach engineer to come out after weeks of talking with Sky via email, my contract was up so I said I would cancel if they didn't send an engineer.  The engineer tested the line and I asked him if he could do a DLM reset and which he did :-) Very helpful and nice engineer, even replaced the faceplate as well, not that their was anything particularly wrong with it just had a slightly newer model.

Internet speed was around 18-19mbit/s after the DLM reset. After a few weeks I made it to 25mbit/s and it now matches the BT line almost exactly in speed (haven't checked other stats). The BT line is actually 2ms worse on ping, but I don't care about that.
