New Broadcom modem for bt infinity
« on: December 07, 2017, 04:17:51 PM »

Hi there,

My 5 yrs old hg612 modem is playing up. I’ve used it constantly in pair with first ASUS n66u and from 1 year with Asus ac68u. Modem recently started playing up and I’d like to replace it. I’m temporary using the bt home hub 5B and noticed higher sync of 75 meg which is reflected in live tests and downloads. I am connected to a Broadcom cab and was previously getting around 69-70 meg sync/downloads. The wireless coverage and performance on this router is really bad though..

Can someone please recommend a modem that will give similar or better sync than homehub 5B?
I’d like to make use of my Asus router and wireless functions too.

Cheers,
kannanni

Welcome to the Kitz forum.  :)

As your circuit is connected to a Huawei equipped cabinet I will suggest that you consider one of the ZyXEL modem/routers, configured in bridge mode. If you can source a VMG1312-B10A that might be an appropriate replacement for the HG612.

I'm sure other members will make other suggestions, in due course.

I'm using a Zyxel VMG1312-B30A  that i picked up on a well known auction site. I like you had previously used the HG612. i use it with the  Asus DSL-AC68U (Custom firmware), and can't fault the Zyxel (Or the Asus for that matter).
The Zyxel stats are better than i use to get on the Huawei. it runs pretty much all the way 80 down & 20 up.
Line Rate:     20.063 Mbps       79.998 Mbps
Actual Net Data Rate:     19.999 Mbps       79.999 Mbps
Hope that helps.
Best, Will

Note that you want a VMG1312-B10A not a VMG1312-B30A , which is for ISDN.

Hi tubaman the Zyxel VMG1312-B30A which i have works fine, how come you say the VMG1312-B10A is the required one? I'm confused (Easily done). I'm only on the BT vdsl.

The VMG1312-B30A is for VDSL2 over ISDN (like Germany).
The VMG1312-B10A is for VDSL2 over POTS (like the U.K.)

The VMG1312-B30A will have an RJ45 DSL port.
The VMG1312-B10A will have an RJ11 DSL port.

This thread has made me look at my Zyxel and i have now realised  that my modem is a B10A & i have flashed it with B30A firmware. I don't know how i managed that, real dumb! All i can say is, it flies & is rock solid. I feel a fool, but oh well, all good fun. I may look at flashing the correct firmware back later.
Best, Will

Update
I have now flashed the correct B10A firmware to my modem. All is good & still flies :).
Getting back on track, i like the others can recommend the  VMG1312-B10A as an alternative to the HG612.

Glad all is good. I suspect if the B30A firmware had tried to update the modem driver then it might have all gone a bit pear-shaped, as VDSL2 over ISDN uses a different frequency plan to VDSL2 over POTS.

Just to let you know, I received the router this morning, loaded latest firmware, and managed to connect via a guide on Zen’s website. Turned the wireless off and placed it on bridge mode and using my Asus ac68u for the rest. It’s syncing the same as the homehub 5B. I suppose reason why is that they share same chipset.

Many thanks for your advice

I'd recommend the B10D rather than a B10A - I couldn't get IPv6 working correctly on the B10A even with the latest firmware (although running in bridge mode I don't think that matters). Stats and stability wise I've seen no difference between the two.

hi,

Was looking to update the firmware for this model, after all this time what do you guys recommend: the official one from zyxel or a custom one from here?
It is still being use in bridge mode and Asus 68u does the rest.

I've seen a custom firmware here that enables MTU 1500,
What are the benefits of this modded MTU guys?

As you are using it in bridge mode the modified firmware image, allowing a 1500 MTU, would be preferable.

Benefits: less fragmentation of the frames in the data link layer, . . .

References: Maximum Transmission Unit, Path MTU Discovery, IP Fragmentation, Jumbo Frames, PPPoE, . . . and so on.  ;)
