KCOM FTTP
« on: October 15, 2017, 04:16:42 PM »

I took a look at an area of Hull where FTTP was rolled out this summer, and you can see some differences to the BT methods.

Attached is a photo of a DP, part way up a telegraph pole. Just above the metal cable protector, it is only just out of reach! This wasn't a one-off ... every pole has the fibre DP positioned like this. Positioned, seemingly so that splicing is done at a relatively low height.

From this DP, there is a bundle of individual cables that runs up the pole, diverges either side of the existing copper DP, and onto the sprung tensioners.

From the photo of the pole top, I think you can make out which lines have upgraded, and which haven't

I also found a couple of videos of the installation process...

- 0:48, The ECI OLT, with 16 PONs per linecard
- 1:06, The fibre DP, showing splice trays (so not blown fibre)
- 1:32, Pre-build team runs cable overhead to an outside splice box (CTU?)
- 1:51, Installation day; wall-mounted ONT

And this old one...

Thank you for providing those images and links to the videos. It is interesting to see how another entity "builds out" their infrastructure.
