you never rebooted your modem after all the steps ? i don't remember if the upgrade process from the GUI reboots the modem...but better doing it to be sure...

About telnet ? did you try what i said ?

In this version there's no file /usr/sbin/telnetd

I did discover the command /etc/init.d/telnet start, but there's still no telnet daemon running. I haven't found anything else. I'll reboot it tomorrow and see what happens.

It's beginning to look as though I really need the genuine 1.0.3 firmware. The repository contains some beta versions, which I might try if I'm desperate.

if you don't want to be hit by the DLM just stop the rooter (no reboot) wait 5 minutes and then restart it.

I'm sure that you just need a reboot, for the system to start on the new firmware.

Uploading the 1.0.3 firmware file caused a reboot, and so did upgrading the GUI, so I think the firmware file in the repository must really be the 1.0.2 version.

I don't know how to stop the router without dropping the DSL connection. I can stop the PPP connection of course, but that doesn't close down the router functions.

try to install the GUI 2.33, and then try to flash the firmware. you'll upgrade to the latest gui after...

About the Wifi @2.4Ghz stuck @130Mbps i found the reason here : https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=156165#p156165
you have to find the channel which fits the best for you between 1 and 9 to get the fastest speed, usually channels 1, 6, 11 are recommended because least disturbed by other channels. So try to force channel 1 or 6 first.

I've managed to brick my DGA4130. I had a bright idea which turned out to be a stupid idea. It occurred to me that telnetd is the telnet daemon which has to be running to enable telnet access. It's included with the 2.23 GUI but not with the 3.7 GUI (and not with the 3.8 GUI either). So I extracted telnetd from the 2.23 GUI and uploaded it to /usr/sbin, then ran it. It immediately crashed the modem, and since then it fails to boot. I've tried a factory reset with no success. So it's back to the Zyxel until I find a way to restore the DGA4130.

and try to flash the 1.0.3 Firmware with TFTPD32. it works with .rbi files, they already flashed the firmware that way in the italian forum. i have good hope 

As long as your active bank is bank1 you can unbrick your modem with TFTP, and also overwrite a locked/unrooted 1.0.4 firmware.
if the active bank is bank2, in this kind of situation : game over.

one way to solve this issue is wait 10-12 sec after the power on and then press the reset buttom for 5-6 sec and release and hope that it reboot...

he needs to run the reset routine BEFORE it crash... and to run the reset routine you need to keep the reset buttom pressed for at least 5 sec and release it.

Thanks for that last suggestion, but I couldn't make it work, although I tried several times with different timings.

But the BOOTP method did work. It didn't behave quite in the way the PDF howto described, but it did install the 1.0.3 firmware, and I was able to unlock it and reconfigure the WAN settings to suit my connection. I'm taking a break now, then this afternoon I'll install the 2.23 GUI (because that seems to be the only version which supports telnet).
