Router list?
« on: August 01, 2017, 11:59:58 AM »

May I ask how up to date the list of compatible routers is?
What would you recommend, ADSL and/or VDSL, below £100, and that's generous! :) Dual band is a burning requirement. Cheers!

It's not up to date. There are new models appearing all the time, and I can't keep up with it.

An ASUS which is supported by WRT-Merlin firmware would be an excellent choice:

No Asus modem is compatible with any 3rd party firmware. Only the RT router only versions can be used with these. The DSL variants will break the modem operability with 3rd party firmware.

I can install Asus WRT-Merlin on my Asus DSL-AC68U but it breaks the modem. It's going to be the same with the Asus DSL-AC88U, that's if it doesn't completely brick the device.

Indefinite; that's why I opened the thread. With my problems mentioned (at boring length elsewhere) I'm preparing. :)

Oh I see, you're asking for a recommendation for a router costing up to £100 that:

1. is compatible with DSLStats
2. Has 2.4/5 GHz dual-band wifi
3. Supports both ADSL and VDSL

Anything else? e.g. number of LAN ports, err.. etc.?

Personally I would go for seperate modem that is known to work with dsl stats first. Then choose a router of your choice. Also its worth taking note of your ISP's requirements for things like wan authentication and ipv6. Using just a vdsl modem and then a suitable router with your ISP settings will ensure no problems crop up in the future. Sky is a perfect example of this. Many a router wont logon with their specific ipv6 and wan requirements. My zyxel in bridgemode as a modem only device needs no specific setup where as my pfsense box as my router is tailored for skys settings...

I think I said 2.4 an/or 2.4/5.
ADSL/VDSL in case I want to upgrade.

Other like most normal offerings i.e. Billion 8800NL. SNRM tweakbilty a bonus but not a definite requiremet.

Personally I run a Huawei HG612 modem with a software router running on my server, pfSense. A lot of my friends use the router provided by their ISP. Indeed, my HG612 was provided by BT when I migrated to FTTC years ago. I used a lot of HH5's that BT have sent me when I renewed but I always returned to the modem.

Does your ISP provide a router?

I think the problem with your spec is the dual-band WiFi. Without that I would suggest the Zyxel VMG1312-B10A or VMG1312-B10D, which get favourable reports from several members here.

That would be my recommendadtion for a smaller budget. If dual band wifi is a must then you can pick up a Zyxel VMG8324/8924 for a bit more.
Thats if you go down the single unit approach.

I always have a seperate modem and seperate router. I can reboot the router and tweak settings, drop the PPP session etc, without disconnecting the xDSL connection which is maintained by the modem.
This setup also allows the modem to be placed at the master socket, and an ethernet cable to be run to the routers preferred location, while maintaining the maximum possible sync.
I'd again recommend the Zyxel VMG1312-B10A run in bridge mode as a modem only for this setup. That leaves you with a huge selection of routers to choose from without needing an xDSL chipset inside.

My interest here relates to another current thread and my last thoughts.
