Further to DSLStats abandoned while Win 7 Computer
« on: July 27, 2017, 08:26:00 PM »

Well from the weekend everything was working reasonably with  a 9 dB margin. That was until last evening when several times there were bursts of noise and margin went haywire. Router and computer were on overnight. I found that there had been trouble in the small hours, so that down speed was reduced to ~250 kbps.
Thankfully it’s more normal now speed wise, but through the day connection has been difficult, as you’ll see from the Event Log.
Strangely, having finished my breakfast watching TV, I looked out the window and saw two SSE transmission side vans by the path to the little substation, but they had departed before I could get out to nosey. This afternoon I phoned SSE, who put me on to their department that specialise in checking that equipment is working to the required standard e.g. frequencies. They agreed to test the substation and report back. It could take a couple of weeks.

They've done a desk survey and sent me an email.

I hope the attached information above will leave you better informed on the specifics of Electromagnetic Field surveys? (EMF)

I have completed a ‘Desktop’ survey and can confirm there is very little potential to generate any EMF values that would require any further action. I have also attached a copy of our explanatory notes called “EMF the facts” and the associated network drawings to qualify the assessment.

Hopefully, these documents will give you very good information and confirm my decision for no ‘on-site’ assessment.

In reference to the ‘EMF the Facts’ document may I specifically draw your attention to page 4 of the document and the associated reference levels?

 My points for no on-site survey;

There is a tremendously high dissipation factor for EMF potential when you move a short distance, even in as little as approximately 3ft or 1mtr from an energised cable or substation.
Your main property is approximately 10 m from the low Voltage underground cable conductor.
Your main property is approximately 15.5m from the High Voltage substation. (Both dependant on cable position in relation to the house building line)
You will notice in the ‘EMF the Facts’ document above we use public exposure reference levels of above 100 microtesla. (Please refer to Page 4).
Typical EMF levels at this distance could traditionally generate EMF readings between 0.01 & 0.3 microtesla.
I would not envisage any reading above 0.4 microtesla at the location. (Well below any potential for concern or further investigation)

Please be advised that if you feel any of the information is not clear please don’t hesitate to call me on my mobile.
Also sent were two maps and a pdf.

Seems to knock the substation as cause on the head, Any further comments? Todays average errors are parc.

Code: [Select]
Average error rates for 28 Jul 2017

CRC erors per hour:  358 Down,  198 Up
FEC erors per hour:  4550 Down,  236 Up
HEC erors per hour:  1312 Down,  300 Up
ES per hour:  33.8 Down,  48.8 Up
SES per hour:  9.14 Down,  0.70 Up

Idling my time a bit, I've been looking at the QLN text files, so have a couple of questions. I hope someone is willing to answer.

1. What is "Retrain reason: 10000?

2. If a tone changes from -130 dB to -136 dB, what does it mean? Changes between samples seemed to be greater in total either way in the upstream tones.

I chose to experiment again with the Technicolor 582n. It was more stable with far fewer errors, but had a weaker signal. I then connected the Billion. That yielded initially a higher sync, soon defeated by the error counts.
The 'orrible noise bursts seem less (holidays?).

Up to now I have liked the Billion, but wonder if it may have gone 'rogue', and so i should think of other replacements.

Comments on my thinking, please.
