Walter,

Many thanks for the post.  Yes, we're determined to deliver ultrafast FTTP to the north of the island... however, the fact that the 2016 National Broadband Scheme does not permit any not-for-profit to be given a grant in excess of the de minimus limit - Є200,000, at today's rates £175,000 - means that the "big picture" project to reach around 900 premises has had to be shelved.

However, together with Telcom (our private sector and forward-looking Manchester-based technology partner), we intend to run a pilot/demonstrator reaching at least 50 premises - probably more - which include five businesses, three of whom are presently using a satellite connection that is expensive and in no way meets their requirements.

Back haul is an issue.  Despite millions of pounds of State Aid to connect the Western Isles with optical fibre via a submarine cable - the BT-HIE Seg1.15 cable from Dunvegan to Carnan (South Uist), visible on the KIS-ORCA web site if anyone is interested - there is only 400Mbps available from the Dunvegan exchange without a major upgrade taking place, and no EAD10G optical circuit available... so much for strategic planning!  >:(

We will continue to keep interested community broadband groups informed about how the demonstrator project is going.
