A brief history of a long line
« on: June 27, 2017, 11:21:44 AM »

It's been a while....... Way back in 2013 had some issues with an upgrade from ADSL to FTTC.
http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,12251.0.html

Here's 4 years worth of speedtest data, you can see it's not been an easy ride speed gradually decreasing from 5Mbps
http://beta.speedtest.net/results?sh=554714f05e3472394c557ee2a0e1d13a

After a very recent change of ISP to Plusnet and using the Hub One (I know what was I thinking) ended up with approx 2.7Mbps.

Anyway Plusnet found a fault on line and after engineer visit where his JDSU sync'd at 5.7Mbps, I've gone back to using the HG612 and seem to be syncing around 4.7Mbps

Plusnet are sending me a new Hub One, but pretty sure it won't make a difference and I'll continue using the HG612

Here's the current stats for today, I wonder if anyone would like to pass comment.

Without going into the back history, I'll say that looks like a very sad connection.  :(

In terms of synchronisation speed, your G.993.2 (VDSL2) service is achieving similar to that of my G.992.3 (ADSL2) service!

Do you know with, any degree of certainty, the length of your D-side?

I believe it's around 2.6km.

What's your distance burakkucat? I'm now wondering if I would benefit downgrading to ADSL2

For my line, the distance to the exchange is around 1.5 miles (2.4 km).

I ordered a 50cm RJ45 to RJ11 Cat6 cable from mr..telephone which was waiting when I arrived home this evening.

Can you tell what time I replaced the regular cable with it?

It seems to have made a small but noticeable step in the right direction.

Also there is a difference in Hlog between cables.

Will now wait and see if the stats look any better over the next few days.

New Hub One arrived from Plusnet so thought I would try it.... Now syncing at 3.389 Mbps down from 4.7 Mbps using HG612

Looking at the Plusnet fault ticket my estimated line length is 2387.8m, not sure how accurate this is.

I believe the Hub One is just a re-badged HomeHub 5A so uses the Lantiq chipset.
If the HG612, which is Broadcom based, is performing better then I'd stick with that.

That's my understanding as well. I'm on a Broadcom (Huawei) DSLAM so it figures that the HG612 works better.

I'm going to give Plusnet a chance to investigate the issue and then will move back to using the HG612. Also wondering if there is a better modem/router I could buy that would give further speed increase.

Lots on here (me included) have found that Zyxel devices - eg VMG8924-B10A -  give very good speeds on Huawei cabinets.
If you're patient you should be able to find a second hand one on EBay for circa £20.

Thanks, worth £20 to see if it will improve things. Will keep an eye on ebay.
