My connection insane this morning
« on: June 24, 2017, 10:15:00 AM »

It has varied from 7000 to 400 down sync thsi morning with numerous drops, and SNRM has moved between 9 and -2 dB. WTH could be going on? is there any clue from router's log and other info attached?

snr dropping means some kind of noise, if your sync is going up and down this backs up the variable amount of noise, other then that I cannot say sorry.  No idea what type of noise it would be.

I didn't want to start another thread. ( hears tentative sighs of relief ;D).
Monday and Tuesday were gruesome with 20+ disconnections.
Errors yuk!
Code: [Select]
23 Jan 2018 20:15
CRC errors per hour: 1196 Down, 43.4 Up
FEC errors per hour: 1408 Down, 670 Up
HEC errors per hour: 7557 Down, 171 Up
ES per hour: 99.0 Down, 16.0 Up
SES per hour: 62.7 Down, 0.91 Up

The Mills of Ren grind extremely slow. At last I connected to the test socket, and now no further disconnections, and errors:
Code: [Select]
Average error rates for 24 Jan 2018 11:35

CRC erors per hour:  1.72 Down,  0 Up
FEC erors per hour:  183 Down,  37.9 Up
HEC erors per hour:  6.09 Down,  0 Up
ES per hour:  1.37 Down,  0 Up
SES per hour:  0 Down,  0 Up
So, it must be a domestic problem. Is it worthwhile to attempt to trace source before I get man in, or best not to?

You've likely posted it elsewhere but could you post a description (or a link to a previously posted description) of what sockets you have and what is connected to each socket please.

Assuming you mean for DSL only, master Nte5 in hall and hard wired extension through cavity to room directly above.

A time ago I did post pics of the sockets' innards, and IIRC B'cat remarked on the extension not being standard. I've searched extensively, but no luck.
Edit:
Master: answerphone via filter
Extension: computer via filter
(Those are the "as usual" details. Temporarily all is wireless).

Do you use the phone side of the filter in the room upstairs?

What is the wire that goes between the two sockets (how many cores)?

Upstairs is normal extension with a dangly in. Only BB side is occupied, as room has DECT slave connected to power socket.

I thought it was CW1308 from previous discussions. I'm clueless re cores.

I had to search through many pages of your past posts but I think I've found the one in which our discussion began . . . I believe it starts here.

Where the extension socket is only going to be used to plug in a router/modem the best way is to have a filtered faceplate in the master socket, connect a twisted pair (one pair of your CW1308 wire) to the xDSL (AB) connectors on the back and then at the other end have a straight unfiltered dedicated data socket in to which you plug the router directly.

I'll be contacting a local with that in mind. Thanks. :) ATM I'm ADSL. Could Cat 5e be better, especially for possible upgrade in mind?

If it is proper twisted pair it's unlikely changing to Cat 5e would make a significant (if any) difference.

Thanks for that confirmation, jelv.

My master socket is in the garage, and my modem/router is at the far end of an internal phone line that goes both upstairs & downstairs, with several outlets along its length. At least some of the sockets are daisy-chained (two cables to a socket), but I don't know if they all are. If you look at the latency graph (Westie) on MDWS, you will see it's not the cleanest of lines.

I'm due to change to FTTC in a week  :fingers: and I've been concerned about noise from the internal wiring. I happen to have ~100m of BT 4-pair 0.5mm cable and I was considering running a separate line direct to the modem. I know it's not cat5e standard, but it should cope with 40Mbps shouldn't it? :hmm:

Thanks, B'cat, (belatedly) for finding old thread and pics, and jelve, for advice re cat 5e.

One little thought is to replace Ethernet cables of indeterminate age too.
