The first recognisable e-mail marketing message was sent on 3 May, 1978 to 400 people on behalf of DEC - a now-defunct computer-maker.

The message was sent via Arpanet - the internet's forerunner - and won its sender much criticism from recipients.

Statistics suggest that more than 80%-85% of all e-mail is spam or junk and more than 100 billion spam messages are sent every day.

That works out at about 14 per day for every living human on the planet.

Yeh luverly innit.... with the finest brains some humans have got... they come up with SPAM and damned Trojans et al... wouldn't this place be better if everyone worked for the good... sigh.... ain't gonna happen is it

I wonder how much more the email system can take before it gives up the ghost altogether.

Believe you me there have been a few ISPs and web providers that have struggled with mail server problems over the past 12 months as a direct result of spam.

Whilst it should be said it hasnt affected all isps...  and some have been upfront about it.. there are several that have kept stum.

We usually get about 3 or 4 viagra offers a day between us, so, on behalf of my wife and myself I appologise to whoever is getting the other 24 per day that is our allocation. Sorry!

A few months ago I tried one of the popular on-line car insurance companies for a quote (Gocompare.com) and ever since I now get on average 2 or 3 emails a day and 2 or 3 letters per week now offering me insurance.

So apart from repeatedly selecting the link not to be contacted again, none of this seems to make any difference.
(except obviously to confirm I have received their junk)

I now intend to complete all questionnaires explaining my full medical condition of:

Epilepsy
Heart problems
Thrombosis
Blind
One leg
Asthma
Low Blood Pressure
Partially deaf
Anxiety attacks
Plus one or two other symptoms which are more of a delicate mature.

When Double Glazing was all the rage with cold calling.
I always made an appointment for a quote for a Friday at 6:30PM
Because thats when the landlord comes to collect the rent I would tell them.

Guess what, they never turned up and no more calls from that company either.
They know landlords will not pay for double glazing.
