Gotta do it
« on: May 01, 2008, 10:26:02 AM »

sorry guys  (not really) - but Ive gotta do this.  ;D

First sync was at 18500 -  but that was more to do with the default SNRM and Interleaving being applied. This line has never really been pushed to its limits before - so I wanted to see what the line was like without making any adjustments and leaving a normal 20m extension cable in.
A move to the master socket didn't actually make that much difference but it reduced the small amount of FEC errors I was racking up.  Due to the design of the house leaving the router at the master socket isnt really practical (unless visitors want to trip over the mains cable as they enter the lounge), so I spent the best part of yesterday and last night redesigning my network.  Chris came round last night and helped pull up carpets and run cables etc..  and at long last the media centre is now also permanently hooked up to Gigabit ethernet.

Installed a NTE5 adsl faceplate and although we were going to run another customised CAT5e cable from master to extension..  removal of the ringwire brought the attenuation of both to exactly the same and stopped any FEC errors.   Considering the amount of alternative CAT5 that that been already laid we decided there wasnt much point if no improvement was going to be seen.

I raised a ticket to get interleaving removed and its ran rock steady flat lining at 4dB in the region of 24000.  After my 10 days and if this continues then I will probably ask for their 3dB profile to be permanently applied.  Using DMT I can actually push this line to get 2kbps off the maximum attainable limit of 24576. It was syncing quite happily at 24574 with a 2dB margin and remarkably stable.  Router stats was running for hours without any deviation.

Ive now taken it back to 3dB and am quite happy to let it sync at 24306 with a 3dB margin. Error count below is cumulative and includes when it was at 2dB... afaik hasn't shifted since last sync. (I think the 1 LOS was me actually performing the resync)

At last! I bet you see what I mean about 8Mbps now eh? No going back now :)

Interestingly I've just posted on TBB front page regarding WBC and the totally unacceptable rollout rate (Q4 2010 here). BT won't have any customers left here if they stick to that schedule!

Is the Be offer still open BTW?

Also on BT based products you could not afford to do this(what do you reckon you will do in your first month kitz):

Thanks kindly everyone.

>> dont mean to be nosey kitz .... well, yeah i do but how much are you paying for it per month??

Im on Be Pro which is £22 pm.
After about 14 days (their DLM profile period) I should be switched to Annex M which gives up to 2.5Mbps upload speed.  Obviously thats likely to affect my downstream as its a shift of frequencies.. but since I use FTP a fair bit it should be worth it.

Be very aware though that its unlikely you would see the sort of speeds Im seeing, its only due to my location / line length and theres not that many people who are members of the "24Mb club"

>> totally unacceptable rollout rate (Q4 2010 here)

yep Q4 2010 here too - despite all major LLUs now being at the exchange.   With the problems Ive had with BTs DLM and stuck bRAS and contention...  Im afraid waiting another 2.5years wasnt really appealling.
God knows why such good lines should be affected so much by the stuck bRAS thingy.

>> what do you reckon you will do in your first month kitz?

Believe it or not - Im not a heavy, the old account I had actually worked out fine for my usage and what I did.
I am impatient though and get peed if I have to wait ages - hence opting for Pro.
I like the speed to be there if I want need it... and yeah if I was male - I could probably be accused of "willy waving". :P

The problem having upwards of 20000kbps is that not many servers can give you that speed. The only servers that I can get full speed from are rapidshare, MS and usenet. I am sure you find that out to your annoyance soon .

Oy...

At least males are mentally stable and have a sense of direction . - James runs very fast to the naughty corner.

indeed - had a bit of a time trying to find a speedtester that could register the speeds.

OY

I do have a sense of direction...  erm sorta ;)
