Supprised to see VM expansion around here
« on: May 23, 2017, 01:23:27 AM »

Hello everyone,

VM has been in the exchange area for yonks but never came into our village, physically it's next to streets covered already but by road it's out the way. Also full FTTC coverage came years ago so I didn't expect VM to bother expanding here. It looks like their doing the whole village with work scheduled through May 2018, I'm wondering if it's FTTP, does anyone know or can tell by looking at the roadworks site?

Their mostly generic notes with just one on Webb Avn mentioning a cabinet "1 street cabinets".

Thanks Kindly.

Well all I can say is that this seems to be happening in other areas. It is happening here in Thanet and we have had FTTC for some years now. I think it can only be good as it will provide a real alternative to the FTTC which is not universally good.

Completely understand what your saying Stuart. Always presumed there was an unsurmountable reason it wasn't installed here, everywhere else for miles has it looking at the TBB maps. Hopefully it is FTTP and not just more copper. Although how do the packages compare between VM FTTP to VM COAX? I'm hoping the upload is a lot better on FTTP.

I don't think there is any difference in packages between coax and FTTP.

Really, that's strange. More potential to in the future though I guess.

well remember coax cable is advertised as fibre so it would damage the belief normal cable is fibre if packages were different spec

It's FTTP, Darren.

I can see why they do it but it still seems a bit silly. Just don't advertise the faster package and offer it via an address check if it's available.

Really, ok. Well I never. Thanks Ignitionnet.

Currently on FTTC getting 70/19 Mb/s, extra download speed would be nice but more upload would useful. VM just told me however the max they do is 20 Mb/s and the only option for faster upload would be a leased line. Fingers crossed either we get G.Fast or VM bump the upload up.

Those are coming. Issue at the moment is that the FTTP is all RFoG. A PON overlay has always been the plan.

Are their new FTTP deployments RFoG or PON?

RFoG runs over PON, PON is the layout of the actual fibre. Do you mean GPON or EPON? The new builds can be both. Initially RFoG with EPON going onto the same fibre later.

The FTTP areas will leave the HFC ones behind at some point in terms of speeds.

I'm no expert on this so excuse my silly questions. I think I'm with you now though, thanks.
