Billion BiPAC 8800AXL R2
« on: May 09, 2017, 11:02:13 AM »

Hi,

After a number of woes with my current ZyXel VMG8924-10A, I'm in the market for a new modem/ router. I was set on picking up a used Billion BiPAC 8800AXL but there don't seem to be any around using the usual channels. A quick look on the Billion website and I found the 8800AXL R2. Now their website is a bit of a mess as it seems to have some discontinued devices mixed in with 'current' devices but upon a quick search, I couldn't get any hits on the R2. So is this a new device?
I had almost resigned myself to the 8900AX but at £170, it's a bit rich for my blood. I'd hope the 8800AXL R2 to come it under that so it could be the one.

Any insight welcome.

Cheers,

Paul

Well it looks like these are now available at around £100 give of take a few quid. From what info I can find, they use the Broadcom BCM63167 chipset which is from the 63168 family (which the 8800NL/ AXL use) I believe.

Has anybody bought one? How's it behaving?

Looks good value for the money.  Any idea about the difference to the 8900AX?  I notice some of the Amazon reviews for the 8900AX complain about its wifi performance

About £80!  ;D

I'd gone off the 8900 after reading several reports of BB performance (read: sync) decreasing with them installed, and I put that down to the chipset they use. From a WiFi perspective, I'd expect the two would be fairly similar given the similar designs. They've just turned the wick down on the 8800.

I think this is just boredom setting in on my part again as my current 8800AXL performs perfectly and is rock solid compared to the ZyXel.
