Thank you Chris and Kitz.

This all came about because following a BT fault Plusnet were quoting various jargon at me, without any explanation as to what it meant.

At other times it was obvious they were quoting terms which meant something totally different to me.

It would be nice if with subjects like Data Rate and other terminology there could be a precise definition clearly spelled out which everybody adhered to.

Perhaps I've been looking at this in anticipation of a simple clear cut answer when the issues involved are inevitably complex, and don't necessarily lend themselves to such a simplistic approach.

I'll continue to digest what Kitz has kindly written and once again it is much appreciated.

Edit: I cringe when someone begins a Post 'Just a little query'

I was intrigued by the references in this thread to a new BTW speed tester, which appears to show the bras profile data rate.
Is that now available for general use?
If so, could someone kindly post  the URL or explain how to find it?

Many thanks

It's at http://speedtester.bt.com/ but you may have to try several times before you get a result. First it asks you for your phone number (and you have to do this from a machine connected to that phone number) then after a long pause - up to three minutes - if you're lucky it will ask you for your ADSL login name and conduct the test. If you're unlucky, which is what happens most times, it will eventually tell you that it's busy. You won't want to use it frequently. :(

Thank you.

I had tried that one but it hung for so long I assumed that link was no longer valid!

I will be a bit more patient next time

Unfortunately since it came out of beta, it seems like most people have problems acessing it.

I believe the best time to try is early in the morning :/
