Query Regarding the EWAN Port of a ZyXEL VMG8924-B10A
« on: October 24, 2017, 10:38:42 PM »

[Moderator note: This post has been split off from a thread regarding the ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A modem/router.]

Got a question regarding the ZyXEL blue EWAN port on the 8924 I take it I don't have to assign any ports and just set it up in bridge mode and stick a ethernet patch lead from EWAN to the modem

If you enable the EWAN port of the device, the internal modem is "taken out of the equation".

"Bridge Mode" only applies if a modem/router is being configured as a modem, the router functionality is "taken out of the equation". "Bridge Mode" only applies to the modem; the modem "bridges the gap" between the xDSL port and the Ethernet port.

Never having used a VMG8924-B10A, I am uncertain of the precise details.

To use a separate modem which has an Ethernet port, you need to make sure that the box is not using the blue port as a 5th Ethernet port for the local Lan,  I think you can then add an appropriate broadband connection. (IIRC)

Thanks

I'm thinking back to the days of the HG612 and HH3 & HH5 days when you just plugged the ethernet cable from port 1 on the HG612 to EWAN socket on the HH3 or HH5 and it automatically went into bridge mode.

And also did they same on EE's BrightBox2 EWAN but had to go into the BB2 settings and set it to ethernet for bridge mode to work with HG612.

Just was thinking how I would need to setup the 8800NL V1 as the modem and 8924-B10A as the router

As simple as you just described. With its default configuration you can simply connect to the blue EWAN port from the Billions bridge LAN port and it should work.

Don't know John it sounds very simple but on the Billion 8800NL things have to be changed from the looks of it as seen is this thread http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=17915.0

From memory as its a long time since I used a separate modem with my ZyXEL, you must configure the ethwan port in the Broadband section so it knows how to connect to your ISP. It may work as is but if it does not you will have to make changes.
