software programmes for windows xp
« on: April 26, 2008, 10:40:42 AM »

After many fantastic holidays in Thailand, I have come to the conlusion that I really need to make the effort to learn to speak Thai, better than the current odd phrases that I have learnt. I would like to do it using my computer as a resource with a progamme that will translate & transliterate text from ENGLISH>THAI>ENGLISH & give a phonetic translation at the same time & even better if it has an audio dialog. From all the searches I have done I realise I am asking a lot, but thought I may be able to get some suggestions here. Many thanks :)

One language learning tool I've seen used in the school I work at is called Rosetta Stone. I googled and they do have a thai version available.

It isn't particularly cheap, but I guess it might be considered good value depending on how serious you are about your learning of the language :)

Check it out - http://www.rosettastone.co.uk/personal/languages/thai

http://www.learningthai.com/

http://www.learn-thai.com/learn-thai/OL_DIC/vocab.asp

http://www.101languages.net/thai/

Here are three options ...the last one seems to be quite comprehensive; the first two giving some valuable information about politeness in using the language etc...

hope these help ...    :)

Thanks to both of you, they are all sites that I did not manage to discover myself. They should keep me busy for a while, but any more suggestions gratefully received :)

Thanks for the pm Oldfogey, I am not registered with them & it is closed currently. I will try to register at the beginning of next month. I have to be honest & say that I am not 100% sure what is on offer but I presume that I will be able to download a programme as a rar or pdf file & use it at my leisure. Thanks again. :)

Yes it has closed "again" at the moment.
But you could also try places like The Pirate Bay, http://thepiratebay.org/ (no registration needed)

As you will appreciate it would be wrong of me to suggest that you do anything that may be illegal.
But should you do so, then you do so at your own risk.

Providing what you find is a legal download IE: "Copyrite Free" then you would also need a small program such as uTorrent to download the link to and then to receive the files.

Yes mainly they are RAR/ZIP and sometimes .EXE (.exe I would always try to avoid)
(so make sure you scan for any virus at each stage before activating any program)

The only advantage of registering is that it gives you access to the *cough* 'adult' *cough* materials (so I've heard).

Re, Registration

No it gives you the ability to leave comments.

I don't know about the others, I'm not a prude either, it just does not interest me.
Now the real thing, that's a different story.

edit
JJ
Even though the site is a semi private site you can still get access from there
edit added: (but a maximum of 3 torrents a week and nothing older than a week is displayed).

Just ignore the registartion box, and use the original link I gave you.
Or try searching just for what you want, you may find a smaller file.

I do have to say that the site does not condone the use of sites such as piratebay.
