Hi and welcome.

There's not much wrong with those stats, although the 15 dB downstream noise margin suggests that it has been rather unstable, and the target noise margin has been increased to stabilise it. What may have happened is that you've recently had a low speed re-sync, which has caused your IP profile to drop. You can check your IP profile by going to http://speedtester.bt.com/ and entering your details as requested.

If this is what happened, and the low-speed re-sync was just a temporary situation, your IP profile should recover automatically within 5 days. However it would be worth reading this and the associated pages, to get some suggestions for improving the quality of your connection.

There are many other possible causes for low download speeds, such as exchange congestion, ISP congestion, or ISP traffic management measures. If you're a heavy user (particularly if you do a lot of p2p downloading) you would quite likely be caught by traffic management measures.

Got caught up on the phone whilst writing this, and in the meantime roseway has replied to me - so rather than edit it I'm just posting it as it was before I realised roseway had posted first!

Hi there Bog, and welcome to the forum :) Nice to see we're being referred by other sites ;D

The errors don't look excessively bad, to be honest.

When you say slow speeds, what are you trying to do? Is it just general net usage, or downloading P2P / Usenet etc?

Regardless, I would ask you to do some tests that are listed on Kitz's slow speeds page, in particular post the results from the BT performance tester (instructions are about half way down that page under "check your IP profile")

Another couple of questions from me:

1. When you get slow speeds, does it happen at any times in the day, at all?
2. Is the wireless in the Voyager turned on, and are you absolutely sure nobody else is using it (neighbour hacked it, etc)?

I'd also like you to post your line stats after you've been synced a while and getting slow speeds, just to see what the error counters are doing then.

Perhaps some long shots, maybe, but we have to look at all the options first. :)

Thanks for the speedy replies
Speedtester
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  5536 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2726 kbps

General net usage, slowest in the morning 8am 11am
Dont know for sure if anybody has hacked in, dont know how to tell
think my router is set up correctly with encrytion etc

Your IP profile is a bit low for your present connection speed, so you must have connected at a lower speed in the recent past. However it's still not a disastrously low level, and normal internet operations should be satisfactorily fast. If using the net is noticeably slow at times, then it doesn't seem to be due to your ADSL connection, but to traffic management or congestion (or possibly error rates, but less likely).

Yeah, that's why I wanted to see a copy of the line stats after or during a slow period.

In fact... if it normally happens in the morning, Bog, would you consider rebooting the router tomorrow morning... using it for a bit.. then if it's gone slow, posting your line stats up after a few hours? Together with a speedtest from BBMax.

That way we could try and eliminate if it was line errors causing the slowdowns or not.

I'll be in til about 1pm tomorrow, so will try and have a look then :)

Your error rates are quite insignificant in those stats, and your download speed shows that your IP profile has risen above the 3000 you reported yesterday. What we really need to see is what your stats are when the slowdown is happening.

Is there anyway you can post how often your line drops? and any changes in the SNR.

All posts are right the high SNR is a bit wierd but not all that bad. The speed is increasing whihc suggests its an intermittent connection. If this may be the case try these bas diags and then let us know the line stats.
