BTOR man has broken my NTE5 ?
« on: March 21, 2017, 01:58:37 PM »

A grumpy BT Openreach man came out this morning and replaced three NTE5As with new ones which I had bought, the same old-style traditional ones, onto which were screwed the existing Andrews and Arnold shop's straight-through RJ45 socket front-plates. And guess what, he zoomed off and left me with a dead line 4. I couldn't manage to call to Mrs Weaver to grab him before he ran away when I could see that the router was seeing the modem but the modem was not bringing the DSL connection up.

Mrs Weaver doesn't have a screwdriver to get the front-late off because Walter, her favourite De Walt power tool, has a flat battery and she forgot to recharge it. And her hands are no good.

So not a good start from grumpy BT man from Glasgow. They are booked to come out tomorrow now. Hope it isn't him next time.

So not a good start from grumpy BT man from Glasgow.

I'm not surprised if he drove from Glasgow - that's over an 8hr round trip according to google.

I'm guessing he didn't really.

An alien concept to those of us down south but it is however, an extremely nice drive, one that I have sometimes done just for sheer pleasure of motoring.  Last repeated in 2016 and just as splendid as I remembered it.  :)

Or at least, it is a nice drive in a comfy car mid-summer.  Not  sure about a BT van, and  wasn't there snow mentioned in these parts this week? ::)

It was that he had a Glaswegian accent, according to Mrs Weaver. There are plenty of locals working for Openreach.

There was plenty of snow on Rannoch Moor. There was even a little here the day before yesterday.

Got to laugh at what Google translate comes up with.

God, Google can't even get English word order right. 'Blas' does indeed mean 'taste' as well. Where in the name of all that's holy did they get 'artificial' from? 'Gallda' means 'non-Gaelic', 'lowland'.

Today's OR engineer has sorted it now. Replaced the front faceplate - an rj-45 / rj11 - only straight-through one - with a new one out of his van. The original had come from the AAISP shop. A bit suspicious that it was working until yesterday's man attacked it.

Very good that today's man had a replacement in his van.

Good news it's fixed,  perhaps yesterday's man informed today's man what he'd need.

Glad it's sorted.

There was plenty of snow on Rannoch Moor.

Which would have made the scenery while driving all the more spectacular.  Making me homesick.   But also making me grateful I no longer live in an area these things are an issue.   :-[

I remember part way up 'Rest And Be Thankful' one December afternoon, aged early 20s, in my Ford Escort 1100, and finding that wheel spin impacted progress no matter what gear I was in.  The whole road was sheet black ice, freshly frozen rainfall.   'What fun' I thought, 'A challenge', and continued my journey, sliding every which way, but came to no harm.   These days it would terrify me, I'd either turn back, or check in to the first hotel I could find and stay there til spring. :'(

That is surprising as not many engineers carry that plate, it's since been discontinued (like most things) :(

@runitdirect - Yes, I was pleasantly surprised. Our man said he had never even seen one before. I hope this doesn't mean that I will not be able to get them from the AA shop any more.

Mrs Weaver presented the previous day's surly Gall with three new NTE5/A backs which I got from the incredibly useful runitdirect shop. I picked the Pressac type that have no MOVs or whatever (I hear you, Burakkucat) .

If I had a volunteer I would insert a second unit that has a MOV inline in front of the existing NTE5 and compare the performance to that with a second MOV-less one, although it perhaps isn't ideal methodologically speaking. But I don't have suitable fingers at my disposal.

Welcome to user runitdirect by the way.

Correction: I was misinformed. Mrs Weaver now tells me that our good man fitted what sounds like an SSFP of the usual BT Pressac type, I presume. I was indeed amazed at the idea that he had the straight-through fronts in his van, but our man he got us sorted out anyway. I had ordered some more straight-through fronts already before Mrs Weaver revealed this.
