When a community outgrows a copper cable bundle
« on: March 15, 2017, 11:00:36 AM »

Everyone here in Heasta is of course on > 7.3km EO lines. Metallic paths for all. Yum.

General question about PSTN and BT: I wonder how much room for future growth that copper bundle allows for then? New houses are being built all the time in the village, and at some point we will run out of pairs. What normally happens then in such a case?

Simply put ..... it will go to our Planning dept / Survey dept upon receipt of an EU/CP order for a landline. What happens next is down to them, and I have no further insight into their workings regarding this, I'm afraid.

I meant to say, does a second load of copper go in? Or one bigger copper bundle?

I suppose in the case of civilisation - forgot that exists - it's a case of filling up some cab - and so I should be asking what happens in that case? And civilisation doesn't run solely on all-copper. So I've heard.

My PCP is out of E-Side pairs. They discovered this after installing a new 2nd fibre cab, a 288 line Huawei. Apparently all the "spare" E-Side they assumed were available are all faulty.
It seems it's no simple task to add more E-Side capacity as I've been waiting since 24th January, and my next update on completing my order is now 28th March. My PCP is around 4km from the exchange.
I'd guess it's a similar problem for EO lines as capacity needs added from the exchange to the properties in question. It may be much easier in a rural area like yours though.

May also be a problem with ducts from the exchange to the 'Cab.
If say they decide to add another 100pair E-side cable that will depend on how full the ducts are since a 100pair will be a decent sized cable.
There are various calculator around that can work out the % fill capacity of a duct depending on x,y,z etc
If it simply is not going to fit then BTOR have a major problem.

If the logistics and the number of subscribers allow...
Might be able to pull in a smaller new temporary cable, swap all subscribers on the mostly dud cables to that new cable on a temp basis then pull out the duds and then install a new 100 pair then swap all to the new cable and them remove again the temp cable.
Probably less work (marginally) than installing a new 4km length of ducts!

If they can get away with installing a 25 pair and they can then they will and any future problems down the road with insufficient spares or yet another cable already in the duct when the others pack up then that will be someone else's problem in 10 years+ time.
