DSLZoneUK.net Speedtester accuracy?
« on: April 17, 2008, 08:47:04 PM »

I've been having my doubts about the accuracy of the DSLZoneUK speedtester, which until about a week or 10 days ago gave results similar to the BT, Thinkbroadband and Speedtest.net London speedtesters.

For example: on 26.03.08
at 21:09 DSLZoneUK gave 4510 kbps
at 21:20 Thinkbroadband gave 4441.39

16.04.08
at 17:04 TBB gave 6026.15
at 17:06 DSLZoneUK gave 3110

I realise that you can't read too much into individual results, but this is not a one off. BT, TBB and Speedtest.net all continue to give closely similar results, but DSLZoneUK has changed and now consistently reports speeds around 2000-3000kbps slower than the others.  I thought it must just be me but was interested to see today that I'm not alone:

My download speed according to http://www.dslzoneuk.net/speedtest.php is now just over 2mb. My speed according to http://www.speedtest.net/ is now just over 4mb. No idea which one to believe, but my observed performance for download and surfing is significant.

Question: what has changed over at DSLZoneUK?

Dunno about your speeds but the Be/O2 result at the top of the >8Mb results table is well dodgy

I think it must just be that DSLZoneUK doesn't like me,  'cos I still get a difference of >1200kbps between TBB and DSLZoneUK...

Having said which, I've just got an IP profile change (back) up to 6500, which is what I've been waiting + testing for  :)

So I won't be testing quite so avidly from now on.

Look at the sponsors at the top of their page - are you surprised that Be/O2 get good reports on there?

Well DSL ZoneUK always gives me a better rating.
Just done these

BBmax 1210down/381up
Speedtest.net.1189/372
thikbroadband 79.05 down/77.59 up(don't know whats going on there, its usually very accurate)
DSLzone UK,1466 down.

Edit, speedtester.bt.com,...........IP profile 1250,   1472 down/448 up, actual IP achieved during the test 1112kbps.
Thats about right for my line,Wonder why the thinkbroadband is way out,any ideas?

No I think more like perhaps someone hasnt selected the right speed?
Be certainly isnt going to be an 8Mb maxdsl account - with a limitation of around 7Mbps
- unless Be give just "that lil bit more" on their sync speed to allow for overheads?

But on 2nd thoughts it is possible that they may have a Be value (8Mb) account
- but if the above is true then it gives Be just a slight advantage? - Ive heard of one other isp doing that in the past.
Theres also Be isnt PPPoA - so different overheads could swing it too.

UB - the TBB speedtest looks weird... perhaps traffic shaping gone haywire?

My only suggestion is to try again using the "Port 80" checkbox and see if that makes a difference

Thanks Mr Chris, just run a speedtest @ 07.15am,still using the port 8095.  1181.21 downstream/376.30 upstream. That is about the norm for my line.
As to last night I new something was wrong by the length of time it took to do the test and by how slowly the light on the router was flashing while it was testing.

There is an 8Mbps product on Be, or there certainly used to be last year. PPPoE does indeed give lower overheads than PPPoA.

As an experiment I tried comparing the results from http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk using PPPoE instead of PPPoA. I added around 100 to the result:

PPPoA:

PPPoE:

I changed the MTU on the router down from 1500 to 1492 for the PPPoE test, but made no changes to MTU etc on my PC.

Both tests connected to BT RIN.
