Plusnet woes... get what you pay for?
« on: January 30, 2017, 09:17:39 PM »

well Ive been live for 7 weeks now and there have been about 4 occasions when ive had to reboot the router to get my connection working properly again..

what seems to happen after 'X' days is that the speed is up and down between 10-20Mbps (should be solid 37.5Mbps) .. and is very intermittent,  I can notice it in my web-browsing, such as when I reply on here all the icons load up slowly, compared to previously coming on in a flash, other webpages are slower to load, the upload is the same hovering between 0.7-2Mb instead of a solid 2Mb - the sync is stable and remains the same, it seems to be the throughput.

Surely if its the router then they have a serious issue as they will have many thousands going through the same thing... I bet its ECI cab vs Plusnet Hub thats the issue... both CRAP!

Im going to post on their forums

anyone else having issues... if not do you use their Hub?

EDIT:

looking in the logs and lots of PACKETS BLOCKED and also this:

IN: BLOCK [16] Remote administration (TCP [59.96.42.104]:51553->[***.***.***.***]:22 on ppp3)

that incoming IP trying to remotely administer my router is Indian??!!
and one from China just before that?> 183.93.223.36

or am i reading it wrong>?

just found this in the Firewall log from the slow speedtests - loads of them:    IN: BLOCK [9] Packet invalid in connection (Invalid tcp flags for current tcp state:

Would need a little more info really. When you notice the speeds drop off is that wired or over wireless? AFAIK the Plusnet Hub is simply a rebranded BT HomeHub 5A.

It's very unlikely that it's the mix of ECI DSLAM and the Plusnet Hub. Different modems can indeed sync a little higher/lower on differing DSLAM chipsets but it shouldn't affect the throughput after the hub has achieved the DSL sync.

If it's over WiFi then it's likely to be the poor wireless performance of the hub and/or wireless interference. It may also be peak time congestion causing throughput to drop.

Some line stats and a more detailed explanation of your setup would help.

Been with them for 7 months without any problems so far. I'm connected to a Broadcom equipped cabinet on an stable, short(ish) line so get the maximum sync speed. No problems at all from Plusnet's side either (no slowdowns at any time of the day). Latency is just as good as it was with BT Infinity.

Never used their Hub One as it is not Broadcom based - it's still here somewhere unopened. I started off by using my old Home Hub 5B but have recently switched to a ZyXel VMG8324 in bridge mode with a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter handling routing duties (UniFi AP for wireless).

You'll see them quite a bit. Plenty of dodgy operators scan entire subnets trying to find unsecured machines and things like routers with default passwords. Nothing to do with Plus.

Sorry, I forgot too add.. that when this happens a reboot is the only thing that resolves it, it IS over wifi on 5Ghz and im the only one using it, it is literally a few feet away, BUT in the room underneath, signal strength is -50db and its defo not that, I get a solid 300Mbps connection using PCI-E 3x3 Intel Wifi card in my PC with 3 external Antenna, also there are no overlapping neighbouring networks, ive checked on inssider, speed is solid 37.5Mbps 24/7 for few weeks, then when i notice its happened I reboot the router and its all fine for another 2 weeks, so its not the wifi otherwise it would be like that all the time?

yeah Ive read lots of bad things about the 5A (Lantiq chipset) and why they had to make the 5B - my sister has one, maybe I will get it off her sometime, and ECI cabs arent without their downsides

everyone that has a decent connection without issues seem to have Broadcom to Huawei (Broadcom is it?) - whereas Ive noticed people on ECI cabs having issues of late

I just havent got the money to buy a replacement router

You could get a HG612 (which has a Broadcom chipset) for very little money off of eBay and use that as just a modem. They are very easy to unlock. If you have an good router lying around, that should get you up and running without having to break the bank.

Are you on the 40/2 package? With those attainable speeds, you could move to the 52/10 package and still get full speeds. If I were you, I would go for the 80/20 on that line :)

You could also consider hacking the Hub One and installing OpenWRT on it. It's actually a good bit of kit that has been completely hobbled by the restrictive BT/Plus firmware.

Plusnet don't do the 55/10 package. It's 40/2 or 80/20. Only customers who were on their old 40/20 service got moved to 55/10. It's not available to any other new/existing customers.

Ah, thanks, didn't know that.

It could be the 5 GHz wifi.

At least one person reported that after a while, their max throughput on the 5 GHz wifi dropped to about 30 Mb/s, and once it had entered that state, the only way to fix it was to reboot the device.

Perhaps try using the 2.4 GHz wifi instead.
