not getting the speed I expected
« on: December 24, 2016, 09:25:11 AM »

BT recently rolled out infinity to my area. I was previously getting around 16.5Mb on adsl, and Its around 300m to the cab, and a further 300 to exchange.

As I was getting a really good speed on ADSL I felt confident the line quality was good and could probably support the higher 74Mb infinity package.

Its been in a week now, and my sync speed is about 39Mb (plugged into NTE5 test socket).

Info from HH6
Quote
Data rate:              15.15 kbps / 39.45 kbps
Maximum data rate: 15150 / 45062
Noise margin:          5.9 / 5.7
Line attenuation:      20.9
Signal attenuation:
VPI / VCI:               0/38
Modulation:             G_993_2_ANNEX_B
Latency type:          Fast Path

Noise margin looks quite good, but I'm not sure about Line attenuation?

I suppose i need to get my hands on a HG612 to get any further useful data?

FTTC speeds are not really related to what speed you were getting on ADSL, and even then, trying to use the ADSL speed to estimate the quality of the line between you and the cabinet, I'm not sure 16.5Mb was a particularly good speed for such a short line.

You can use an unlocked HD612, or any other Broadcom based VDSL2 modem/router which provides full stats access.

Thanks, I'll see if I can pick one up on ebay.

Re. ADSL, I thought the max speed was 17Mb (advertised by BT)? 16.5 is pretty close?
Also, when I was on ADSL I wasn't plugged into the test port.

I initially had infinity connected the same way and was getting 34-35. Plugging into the test port brought it up to 39.

If you're getting 15Mbps up I would certainly expect you to get more than 39 down,  a suitable modem will reveal  more.

Don't pay over the odds for an unlocked hg612 they are easy to unlock. You might find a ZyXel or Billion better, as an all in one device, steer clear of Asus VDSL modems though. Also check on here if the model you choose is good for stats.

Hi, my line is 639 meters and the attached is my line stats.
Note:- I used to be capped at 38Mb but now getting full rate for my line.
Sadly I got interleaved trying to get more than 52Mb, it's on day 15 now and no sign of it going away :-[ even though the error count is very low :-\

Thats interesting, I have slightly lower noise and about the same attenuation.

I found a cheap  VMG1312-B10D (thanks for the modem tips Ronski)

If I'm not going to get more than 52Mb I might as well downgrade the package from infinity 2 to 1, and save £6.50 per month.
I probably only have 14 days to to this (3rd Jan).

I know it's a BIG drop but since changing over from VM, mainly for  cost saving of about £30 per month and from a 50MB connection down to, well it's listed as 'up-to 18MB' but TBH I have never been able to reach even 7MB/s DL but apart from the constant disconnections I haven't really missed it very much.

Obviously I stopped downloading music and movies some time ago

I had a quick peek inside cover where the BT line comes into the house (I was just curious to see what state it was in). I haven't changed anything.

It looks like the thick black cable comes underground from the cabinet. Then three white cables enter the house.

I'm not entirely sure if this is just supplying just me, or me and my neighbor -he told me he had two phone lines, so the three white cables entering the wall points to it supplying both of us.

The brown cable doesnt seem to do anything and is cut just after it leaves the junction box.

I cant help but think it's a bit of a mess!
