Best BT Fibre Modem? HG612 not good for VPN?
« on: December 13, 2016, 11:29:56 AM »

Hey All,

Just signed up here!

I finally managed to order FTTC after my box being over subscribed all year.

I am looking to run a Unifi RouterX with a BT Openreach VDSL Modem but i am having trouble deciding which bt modem to go for. I have heard the HG612 has trouble with VPN's?

Is it a case of going for an unlocked HG612 as it can allow the line to be monitored? I see on ebay there is B-Focus V-2FUb/r Rev.B is that just as good?

Thanks! :)

bear in mind the B-Focus V-2FUb/r Rev.B is ECI modem, both stats programs mentioned on kitz won't work with it. You can get stats if you are prepared to mod it, requires soldering, drilling and loading firmware. Even after that though you won't be able to upload stats if wanting to use hg612stats or dslstats. The only stats you can get after modding is either from the gui or you can do it at command line level.

I would suggest either hg6123B  unlocked or zyxel 8324 in bridge mode or billion 8800nl v1 in bridge mode  - depends on your cab type. Do you know what cab type you are on. I use my vpn from pfsense with my 8324 as my modem with no hassle and I am on ECI. All of the ones I mentioned will allow you upload stats if you wish to do that.

Thanks for the info! Is there any way i can find the cab type without going on a walk-about and looking at what type of box it is?

The cabinet ID is EADOW

Thanks!

Hi,

I've used an HG612 for four years and never had any VPN issues.  I've connected to Cisco AnyConnect VPN concentrators, generic IPsec VPN servers and SSL-based OpenVPN servers without issue.

Additionally, I host my own IPsec VPN server on my home LAN and can connect to it externally without problem.

Cheers,
Chris

Sorry for the late reply, i am going to get the HG612 :)

Do you know anywhere i can get them at reasonable price? Some on ebay are £50! seems like a bit much?

Thanks

Edit - All the cabinets around me are all Huawei not ECI

there's loads on Ebay around £30, 1 at £27
don't pay extra for an unlocked unit. it takes 2 mins to unlock.
you don't need anything fancy to unlock it. you also don't need to be some tech genius.
