Anyone recommend a good router for FTTC..?
« on: December 09, 2016, 07:27:48 PM »

Hi all.. been a while  ;D

ive moved into a 2bed house where ive just got plusnet 40/2 activated, its working fine (although im gutted my max data rate is 69Mb as im within 100m of the cab - must be lot of FTTC takeup in this street) - anyway im using the plusnet Hub One which is just a BT HH5 but white, I'm looking to buy a VDSL router with AC wifi...whats good on VDSL lines these days? ive lost touch with it all as ive just spent two years on Virgin Cable 100/6 which was great...but cant get it here, so Im back on a DSL connection

any advice would be great

Hello Snadge,

Please take a look at Kitz' initial post that starts this thread.

I will suggest that you research the various ZyXEL VMGxxxx-B10x devices.  :)

Hi snage, wb to the wonderful world of DSL  :-\

My own personal choice for a wireless AC device would be the Zyxel VMG8924.   It does have some quirks with the GUI, but on the whole they seem to work well on the majority of lines. Unfortunately they're not always easy to get hold of - could try here

Billion do some reliable modems, but of late they seem to have got rather expensive.  You don't say if you're on a Huawei (BCM) or ECI (Lantiq) cab, but tbh Im on an ECI cab and find that the BCM  based modems still work best on my line.

Personally I have an hg612 as a modem with a Zyxel VMG8924 configured as modern only for backup with an Asus RT-AC68U router and an RT-AC66U as an access point, both running RMerlin firmware. Works well for me. Both modem devices hold a good sync on my line 1.5Km copper run to cab. If anything the Zyxel holds a slightly higher sync rate but the HG612 is slightly more stable. The Asus devices both work well in my environment.

Take a look at the cabinet and then compare what you see with the images here.

You could also look up the known details of the cabinet, as detailed here.

No some of the Huaweis just have one door too.   The vents are the most telling when looking at them.
Best using magenta if you dont know - see here.

No type of cab shouldnt make any difference to latency.   If they are getting 5ms then they must live practically next door to the datacenter!  Typical latency to the bRAS is 6ms, before you even start on any core transit.

how can i find out my cabinet number?  im on ebchester exchange and post code NE17 7DG

does anyone know what chipset the hub one is?  ive done some research and it seems that the hub one is a HH5'A' and is susceptible to causing slower speeds and latency due to not having G.INP...if your on a G.INP enable cab (from what i can gather is just about all cabs?! - am i right? or wrong?)

PS.
If you are going to go for a Zyxel, because you said you wanted wireless AC,  can I just re-iterate that the model you need would be the VMG8924-10A

Quote
my personal choice for a wireless AC device would be the Zyxel VMG8924.

The 8324 and 8924 look the same, but the 8324 is only wireless N.
Although saying that, most will agree that the the range of the 8324 is pretty good.  In fact unless I was stood practically next to the router,  my 8324 gave a better speeds than one AC device I tested.
