YEY got my HG612! Hows my stats? (Missing Tones)
« on: December 08, 2016, 01:47:02 PM »

hey everyone, ok so first off im not trying to be lazy or anything lol im currently googling all this to try and learn it all myself but id love some feedback from u pros if possible :)

my adsl checker estimates of 60 down and 16.8 upload lowest on a clean line

Im on an ECI cab and about 500 meters from it.

So for quite some time i had 50 down 6 up on an 80/20 fibre package, Then after some power cuts i was at 30/1.8 and ive had that speed for a few weeks until today when i put the hg612 in, now im getting 45 down and 3.19 up.

Plusnet said my line checks were all fine so iv had 2 bt engineers round but no faults been found, and the only thing the engineer really said was that im probable suffering from crosstalk.

Ive had dslstats up for about an hour and a half and was wondering how my stats look?

http://imgur.com/a/VWGul

EDIT: ok as im stupid i didnt even realise the expand and compress slider so the previous pictures arent good lmao reuploaded some here lol http://imgur.com/a/VWGul

I don't know why, but you are missing tones 2000-2750. Your sync should be higher for an 18.1 dB line.

Yeh i noticed that to, everyone else had the upload green lines there and i have nothing, also my U2 is flat on the snrm per band :S heres the pbparams

thanks for the replies btw guys i really appreciate it :)

EDIT: i even restarted the hg612 earlier just incase it was some sort of bug but its still the same, also i went back to an older firmware just incase that was the problem but its showing as the same, also the results are the same in hg612 modem stats

Normally, crosstalk from the upstream signals is managed to a degree by Upstream Power Back-Off (UPBO). UPBO arranges for modems on shorter lines to reduce the power level they transmit their upstream signals at, so that at the cabinet, all the upstream signals from different lines arrive at the same power level (the signals from longer lines being attenuated more by the length of line).

So I suppose it's possible that someone else using a third-party modem with UPBO disabled could adversely affect your upstream speed. Without UPBO, their modem would be transmitting at full power, and especially if they are on a line of similar length or shorter than yours, their upstream signals would be stronger than yours when received at the cabinet. This would cause significant crosstalk, which would appear as noise on your upstream frequencies, possibly consistent with your raised QLN on your U2 band.

However I think it's fairly uncommon for someone to be using anything other than their ISP-supplied device. And there is no way to verify this theory without tracking down the offending modem, if it exists. Openreach ought to be able to see details of the modem each line is using, but I've never heard of them identifying non-compliant devices, even when they might be affecting the performance of other lines.

The sync is low in both directions especially on the upstream which is way down on what it should be, I think even in a worse case scenario I would expect at least 10mbit on that line upstream.

The missing U2 needs investigating but I dont know how you would present the fault as tech support is dumbed down.

Also on the QLN graph most of the U2 range is incorrectly marked as 'other'.

EJS's UPBO explanation is possible.

Hmm ok bare with me as im a beginner in all this lol, would i be able to get a router that has a disable UPBO option and turn it off as well? to kinda even it out? sorry if im stupid lol. i had a lil google and noticed some routers have the off option! which is pretty cool, like asus https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjGsrvklujQAhWlJMAKHclQBf8QFgggMAE&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.asus.com%2Fsupport%2Ffaq%2F1015709%2F&usg=AFQjCNHImC0wlhCYAcsiGd2ANEbERib2dg&sig2=cxHJzG1u6LNNwvQ6feKyqg

If their line is shorter than yours, then their upstream signal would still be stronger than yours when they reach the cabinet.

No, but both up and down showing the same value is a reporting bug on ECI cabinets.

I have a similar problem,  although download is not affected. I'm at 450 to 500 meters and my upload has gone from 12 Mbps to around 4.5. The bit loading on the tones the modem is using is very low.

Well EJS, it turns out you are a genius! :D . So  last night before i got my new router, i had the bt home hub into the hg612 setup so i could see my stats, as u know i was missing tones etc. I always had -3.something power and as u know i was getting bad upload speed. My speed, power dbm has flown up! all i done was disabled that upstream power settings, sucks because i wouldnt normally use something like that but as my speed dropped so low, even 1.5 upload now and then, i think iv gota fight fire with fire here :(

Nice improvement there, I wonder what affect it's had on others, though we'll never know.

I'll keep this option in mind should mine deteriorate too much.

A short comment on power levels.

Notice that the unit of power being discussed here is dBm. In words, that is decibels relative to one milliwatt.

So a reported power level of 0 dBm is equivalent to 1 mW.

Likewise a reported power level of 1 dBm is equivalent to 1.3 mW, whilst a reported power level of -1 dBm is equivalent to 0.794 mW.

Just because the sign is negative it does not mean the power is a negative quantity. With units of dBm, a negative sign indicates that the power is less than one milliwatt.

The Wikipedia dBm page is a good starting point when attempting to understand the subject.  :)

ooo, well the reason the power dbm stood out to me is because, all over the forum, lookng at other people stats iv never see anyone else that had -3.4, not even - etc lol it was always in the positive. When reading the explanation on upstream back off power it actually says there can be problems with the dslam not giving off the right amount of power etc so fingers crossed im not affecting others.
