TV Tuners
« on: April 19, 2008, 05:31:35 PM »

Hi all,I have just been wondering about USB TV tuners,do they need to be connected to an external ariel or do you just have a small desk top ariel that plugs into the USB stick. And if any one uses them, are they any good.

I've got a Hauppauge Nova-T USB stick. It came with a small rod aerial, but it's useless here. With a proper aerial plugged in it's fine.

Of course, this is digital TV (Freeview) which is very dependent on a good aerial signal. The little rod aerial would probably be OK in a strong signal area.

Yesterday I got a "Digital TV DVD-T USB Stick" price £20.00
(Actually I got it for a friend and just playing with it as I type this)

(some stolen text to save re-typing, just in-case it looks familiar)

It came with a small rod aerial, but it's useless.
(possibly because of double glazing)

The little rod aerial would probably be OK in a strong signal area.
( I have the same problem when indoors with my SatNav and weak signals )

So I plugged my normal aerial into it and got 60 channels straight of.
( It came with a aerial converter, a USB extension cable and a remote control )

Other than that so far it seems quite good, but only time will tell when used away from home.

I've never found any area where the rod antenna is capable of working* with Freeview. I don't believe there are currently any areas where the rod antenna will work other than within a couple of miles of the transmitter, and even then probably not inside a building.

When analogue is turned off and the DVB-T transmission strength is increased the rod antenna might be useful for Freeview but for now its only useful for analogue TV, always assuming you have a TV card/stick which does analogue and digital.

*you sometimes get a couple of channels on one of the mux which use 16QAM if you're lucky, but even then its prone to audio/video breakup.
